The caravans with trailers are arriving left right and centre, horses are tethered on the main roads, and hubs nearly got smashed into in the landy, beeped his horn, and got seriously threatened - had to go to the police.

It's geting earlier and earlier. The council have designated three sites for them, BUT they have made a bylaw that they can only be used for a total of 28 days , which means that the travellers will have to move on very soon, and where will they go then ???

I am genuinely worried about Shy, and am planning on stabling him over the worst period, but even riding out we would have to pass a camp at the top of the road.

I detest this time of year, and everything to do with Appleby.

Rant over, I thank you ;)

Loves all the Gypsy fairs, In fact I think since you are riding a gypsy horse you should be greatful to them:p

A rescued gypsy horse ;)

The fair itself is probably ok, not that I'd go in a million years (former RSPCA Inspector), it's the build up to it in all the surrounding (and not so close) areas that really suffer. They trot the horses flat out outside our house, they bring a crimewave to the area (so much so that the police park a mobile station just down from our house), and all the other stuff that goes ith it.

I am NOT racist in any way, I am just stating what happens in our area during Appleby time. The minority ruin it for the rest, but the extra police presence here must mean it's not just me that thinks this.

Just seen a load of new fencing go up on the A65 near home with no camping signs (Van pulling caravan with a big red cross through it, horse pulling wooden traditional caravan with a green tick?) all over the posts. Basically all the usual road verges have been put behind barbed wire. It may be that camps will set up somewhere more unsuitable so not sure this approach is actually any better...To be honest (*touches wood quick*) we have had no crime wave or trouble beyond some excess refuse to clear after they move on.

I know the feeling- I live near Stow on the Wold. I used to keep my beautiful coloured pony very close and was terrified every year (well twice a year)- I had every other caravan/transit stop and shout "how much for the pony love" and get crabby when i refused to sell!

I actually like going to look round but then often wish i hadnt.
When is Appleby? Stow is this Thursday so they are everywhere now- I belive they ususlly leave quickly tho' to come on to Appleby? (leaving behind the most major clearing up operation i have ever seen)

I have never been to Appleby and all I have seen is what has been on the TV and in the papers over the years... I guess it might be a nice day out and to see how things from a different angle (rightly or wrongly) are in the big wide world of horses.

I would imagine living and breathing it whilst its in town is a totally different thing tho... and I can totally see who the locals at times don't want the hassle, the rise in crime and the general bad behaviour that some of the travelling community bring with them.

There are good and bad in ALL groups of people but I imagine it would be hard at times for the locals of Appleby to be invaded by the masses and to, in some cases, have their worlds turned upside down...

Appleby looks like such a beautiful and tranquil place :)
