Just got back off of holiday and will be getting a new wider three fold girth for Hattie to replace the one that gave her a rub.

I remember in my last post about girths that surgical spirits and rubbing alcohol was recommended to toughen up the skin at the girth area.

So my question is, where do a buy surgical spirit (Boots?) and is it the same thing as rubbing alcohol?

Also too, do I just splash on the stuff on the girth area or do I actually rub it on. Do I put it on the whole girth area or just where she got the rub?

How long do I keep doing this for?

Sorry for all the questions but just want to be sure as I don't want her getting another rub?

Hi

it's to toughen the skin.

Put it on a cloth and rub the girth area daily. It depends on the horse but on youngsters who have the saddle on for the first time i tend to put it all over the girth area and especially on the thin skin behind the elbows xx

I used surgical spirits from a chemist when my horse got a small rub on his saddle area. I waited until it was definitely healed then just applied it to that area daily with some cotton wool. From what I remember it worked well, he definitely never got another rub. I would now do a patch test first though- am more paranoid that I used to be.
