Arab horses and their appearance in the news

Complete with a picture of a fresian! Daily fail at its best! I get the gist of the article and I agree the trend is worrying but I've also seen far worse examples of overly dished heads on Arabs than the ones they have used so im not sure what use the article has, it's badly written and very poorly researched

there's a better piece in the Guardian but they weren't allowed to publish a picture of the horse in question-which is why the Daily Fail isnt either I expect (doesnt explain the Friesian though!).

Its disturbing but then so is the fashion for halter bred QHs, and noone's done anything about those as far as I can tell.

A far better article in The Telegraph which actually manages to use a picture of the horse in question. It is scary what Americans are breeding, to my eye they are hideous and can see nothing attractive in this type but they seem to think they are beautiful and lots of people agree. That aside the dreadful conformation and deformity cannot be in doubt it's very sad. Thankfully there are plenty of old fashioned ridden arabs in the UK although articles like this give the breed a bad name.

This is some footage:

I’m not surprised this horse came from America. Why they have an obsession with turning such a beautiful creature into some sort of freak show I don’t know.

This just makes me so sad.

What are we doing???? How is this better?

I hope a stop is put to this or horses are going to go down the same route as dog breeds - breeds so deformed they can't breathe properly or give birth naturally or something!

Poor animals. What happened to the Crabbets wasn't good at all. But my word, the tough hardy animals that resulted... Worlds apart from these poor caricatures.

PS I got the impression that the Fresian was a picture from the stud website and the picture editor just didn;t know what to include.

Oh wow, I admit I quite like the sea horse look but that is just disgusting! How does it even function!? Surely that can't be a healthy horse (and I use the term horse in loosest possible sence)

Having managed Orrion Farms successfully under the ownership of Harold & Dolly Orr for years, when the farm was sold recently to brand new Arabian horse owners, Doug remained as manager. Once he laid eyes on El Rey Magnum RCF, he urged the new owners to acquire this special young colt. “I travel all around and see several impressive young horses but rarely do I see one that stops me in my tracks. I simply could not believe my eyes and what I saw in front of me. Horses like this come by once in a decade. It is all about Arabian type for me that makes this breed unique. An Arabian is never going to out trot a Saddlebred or out run a Thoroughbred, what defines an Arabian is their exquisite type. This was exactly what El Rey Magnum RCF is all about. We must preserve Arabian type or we will loose the majestic look the separates us from other breeds.” Doug Leadley

They are completely dellusional!

For the most part they do tend to look a little better as they grow, though there are examples that still keep it.

I did wonder whether it was intentionally bred as such but looking at the damand sire it would seem so - I can see him turning out like the dam perhaps.

It's the usual self-deception - if something is good, more of that something must be better. In this case, it's dished faces. :frown3:

So many people in today's developed (and commercialized) world lack the concept of "enough".

The picture makes me feel ill to look at. Poor horse.

:( :( :(

Extreme dish is not part of traditional Arab type, have they seen photos of the old desert bred arabs? It is a modern fad of halter breeding, especially American halter breeding.

what an ugly horse!!! looks just like a sea horse to me.......he looks like he is having to flare his nostrils alot to get enough air.....the frightening thing is they will breed loads of arabs from him to the detriment of the breed. what a shame...

Its all kicking off on the crabbet facebook page.
As someone on there also pointed out its hindleg conformation is pretty horrific too. Its more cow hocked than a clyesdale, long long long cannons and out behind. Even with the best will in thw world that horse will be unrideable.

Shame... the Arab breed used to be quite nice... will be ruined now like so many dog breeds....

I don't think that the whole breed will be ruined, but if things carry on I can definitely see a split between 'halter' bred arabs and ones bred to be ridden. No-one who wants an endurance horse is going to breed from that colt for example.

TBF I think that split has existed for a while, there isn't much saddle room on some of the halter types? Or many of them going on to do ridden I don't think?

But yes I absolutely agree that the whole breed won't be ruined, I think for the most part this is just a US phenomenon and arabs in the breed also benefits from the fact that other people do want it to be athletics (though maybe the current state of endurance is not a benefit but with regards to maintaining a functional type).

Horses that are shown in-hand over here certainly can and do go onto having careers under saddle or mix the two. Adawy is an example of a horse who has done both showing in-hand and under saddle (won HOYS ridden arab of the year 2013 IIRC). I don't think that happens so much in the US though.

my go to reference book for arabs is the arabian horse by peter upton,in it it is drawings and photos of a lot of the horses seen and imported by lady anne and wilfred scawen blunt from the desert to start crabbet arabian stud, it kind of sets the standard by way of showing the, original, not necessarily show confo, horses that were bred in the true environment of that breed, which were used for the functional purposes bred for.

it shows many different types from varying bloodlines, some truly spectacular horses and not the show criterea of of the modern age, there are other super stallions that set the true standard, for me the late polish stallion comet.

Makes me so sad and angry - horses are the most beautiful creatures in the world, and arabs one of the most glorious historic breeds....humans make me so cross
