Archie has never had a days illness in his life, (toddles off and touches wood ...).

I have noticed that our last couple of rides, during a very sedate plod around the forest, he may cough, 3 or 4 times, one after another. He then clears his nose, 99% of the time which I understand is a good sign, but it is so out of character that I am worrying about him.

This weather is very changeable at the moment and I am wondering whether the recent hot spell then getting caught out with torrential rain and a bit of a cold spell has given him a little cough. It could be some grass stuck in his throat perhaps or swallowing gnats and flies ... they are horrendous at the moment, with the damp grass and humidity.

He is not unwell in himself, no discharge from his nose or mouth, eyes bright and he isn't constantly coughing. For instance, today, we ambled along for about half an hour then he coughed 3 or 4 times. He cleared his nose mostly afterwards but say between cough 3 and 4 he didn't. He went on to cough again and then cleared his nose but it sounded like it was clearing a dead fly or something as opposed to refreshining his airway. Hope you understand what I am trying to explain.

He is eating and drinking fine and pooing normally so all else seems okay.

I do monitor him closely and am not sure at this stage calling a vet would come up with anything as he seems well in himself. Is there anything else I can do, checks I can do to determine whether a vet is needed or its just one of those things.

Many thanks.

I would take his temperature, it should be between roughly 37.5 and 38C, this will help determine if he has a virus or not.

Try soaking his hay for a few days to see if this makes any difference. Give his stable a good clear out, get rid of any cobwebs etc.

What happens when you trot or canter? My horse developed a cough a few weeks ago, it was only minor in walk but as soon as he started trotting he would cough a lot and violently :( I got the vet out and they diagnosed RAO, apparently it can come on very suddenly and out of the blue! Changing his bedding from straw to shavings, giving him soaked hay and making sure his stable is as ventilated as possible have helped loads.

does he have any mucus coming from his nose either white or clear ? or any other colour
it could be a cold ,alot of horses get them
i would keep him warm and give him some human cough mixture , give him a couple of days to see if he improves also wet his hay , keep him off dusty things so dust free enviroment and see how he goes

Oh, thanks guys for replying. Archie isn't stabled. He lives out 24/7/365 and is just living on fresh air, grass and a token feed for being a good boy.

JR, you could be right with the oak pollen. I have just moved him into a new paddock which is beautifully shaded, knee deep in grass and very idyllic. In the middle of it is a wacking great big oaktree. He has been in the paddock the last three summers and I have never had a problem before.

So far as excercising, we pretty much plod all the time. The ground is very hard and rutty at the moment so nothing but ambling along at a walk at the moment. We have never, ever bombed around, we're more of a lollop along taking in the scenery kind so I don't think it would be anything brought on my strenous exercice ... huh!? Archie doesn't know what strenuous exercise is, nor do I come to that ;)

Anyway, going to take his temperature to see if thats okay. He hasn't got any mucus or anything suspicious coming out of any orifice. His eyes are bright and clean. He looks fabulous, just this little intermittent cough.

Any more advice would be very welcomed.

I would just put him on some human medicine at first like Benylin and see how you get on :) Have you listened to his breathing from his nose? If there is a clacking sound when he breathes in or out or he is wheezing I would have the vet. My horse has been like you describe for a short while and then he started misbehaving, we had the vet out on Wednesday and it turned out he has a mild upper respiritory tract infection and has been put on Ventapulmin. Could be something like this but it's nothing too serious, I can ride him again on Monday though, again, he was perfectly happy in himself just had a dry cough and was clacking. I don't mean to worry you but it could be nothing, hope this helps ;)

RC and all, thanks for replying, Archie is 100% fit and healthy in every way but coughed as I described during a ride and the one previously to that. As I said, the air was quite 'buggy' with flies and gnats. Could be that. If I suspected anything untoward I would have called the vet out by now but in my mind, if I called the vet out for every little thing that I thought might be wrong I would be very poor and the vet rich and Archie wouldn't have actually needed any treatment, hence my ask as to what you all would do. Its not like it is a daily cough or anything, just noticed it on these two occassions.
