I had some traffic to my website from a blog about Akhal Tekes the other day and looking at them they are gorgeous! I have always had a secret desire to have an eventer with a fair proportion of arabyness in it because I rode a little arab chestnut mare for a while and she felt like sitting on a magic carpet which I think appeals to my lazyness!!!

So does anyone know if any Akhal Tekes that have made it eventing? nearest to that I can think of is Tamarillo who I think had a fair bit of arab in him, yeah?...

no idea, but i've always fancied one, going eventing on a metallic horse would be very classy! could dazzle the judges into giving me 10s perhaps!
just need a winning lottery ticket...
seriously, they look like athletes, no idea how well they jump though.. i think there was a thread on here about them a while ago and this question came up.

I actually went to try one about 6 years ago for endurance. Lovely horse but was a bit nappy so didn't buy him (they tend to be very expensive due the rareness of them in this Country).

By sheer coincidence I stabled at the yard I tried him when going to an endurance event. Turned out someone had bought him to take eventing and he was going well (I think it was only Unaff, but maybe wrong).

The trouble with them is the high head carriage, very similar to Arabs in that they can find it difficult to 'round' properly, especially if very upright in the neck. Each one no doubt is an individual and I am sure can adapt to dressage. They are renown for terrible conformation but are extremely tough.

huh? what do you mean by metallic horse?...

They are certainly v pretty, and having jumped an arab it felt amazing I think they would be the same, this is the blog http://eventingakhaltekes.blogspot.com/ they looks pretty neat jumpers too

Oohhhhhh I want an akhal teke!!!!! *whinge*

An Akhal-Teke stallion called Absent managed to get Olympic gold in 1960 and bronze in 1964; so some of them can definitely do dressage! Speed and stamina should not be an issue, and I've read that that can jump well enough.

I believe there was an Akhal-Teke stallion ( Aschir ) competing BE last season (at intro level); and also a current or recent working pupil of Matt Ryan took an Akhal-Teke with her to his yard. Maybe Tabledancer or someone might have seen them?

I think they're stunning horses, and I'd love to have one myself. Mind you, I also want a Lipizzaner, an Arab, an Orlov, a Quarter Horse, an Australian Stock Horse, a Trakehner and a partridge in a pear tree!

Really impressed by their jumping and the dressage wasnt to shoddy either.
Wouldnt mind one, although i only showjump i think they might be wasted just doing that, fab horses

They are rare, the main stud in Russia has been struggling but I think they are doing ok now. friend of mine had a part Akhal Teke. Lovely horse, but a complete nutcase.

Here is a short clip of Absent in piaffe:

Gorgeous. But - naturally their build isn't great for dressage or eventing. They have very long backs and arab like croups. However, they have amazing stamina and fitness capacity. It is also worth noting that they carry the gene that causes DSLD, a nasty horrible disorder.

In that case you may want to look at Polish Anglo-Arabs from Janow Podlaski stud in Poland. That's were Tarnik, Tamarillo's sire was bred and they have some fabulous horses.
Nothing beats good Anglo-Arab for me

If well bred they are true athletes with an inbuilt GO button

Loving the jumping here, I'm quite impressed with the quadruple bar. At the very end there are two horses jumping it, the first one stands off a mile and still clears it!

There are a few out and about on the endurance circuit now. I met an AT x Arab at a ride last year (bred by Saint Westwell), very level headed and focused. He flew round the ride and also won an 82km race ride, amongts other great results. I was VERY taken with him.

There does seem to be a bit of confusion though - Akhal Teke's are not part bred arabs nor do they have any recent arab blood in them. They are a totally distinct breed.

I'd love one but they are too expensive for me.

My old horse was an Arab X Riding Pony (WelshxTB) and he was amazing to ride, did 1m40 courses like they were sticks.. he won the newcomer final as a 6yr old and qualified for foxhunter final as 7yr old.. but he could be quite lazy untill his blood was up! I think if you get an arab that likes to jump and isnt too spooky your well away as they are so athletic.
I would love to have an akhal teke. When I was younger I used to dream about having one lol. Although I could never decide if I wanted a silver or a gold one!

Wow I love this post - I have a AT cross, he's my very best friend! BBEyes - we're not sure exactly what he's crossed with possibly some Welsh/TB, I could only get vague info out of his breeder.

He has all the traits of one, lovely shiny metalically coat, looks fab in the sunshine esp because he's a roany pony, high head carriage (used to drive my dressage instructor mad!), long backed, strong willed, amazing gallop, and he can go for days without drinking but will then have a good long drink an AT desert survial technique.

I've had him 17 years this summer, he's been a superstar, fantastic jumper, he was bred by a SJ'er. Over the years however, he was prone to alot of injuries, mostly from field antics. Whilst at uni I loaned him out and he was on all the PC teams with his surrogate mum.

He's back home now with me, semi retired and teaching two weanlings all his tricks. We all love him to bits and wish I could clone him. He just loves cross country too! Bless, I don't have any jumping piccys on my laptop in fact I don't have any digital ones of his younger years

Will try and dig out some 'retired no top line but glistening coat' pics for you or maybe I should get around to scanning some old happy, fun times ones!

Off to bed for some happy AT dreams now!

Get an arab instead

can't beat them ha ha!!!

I plan to event mine and he has one hell of a jump he's proper show quality too... I was told by a top show judge (who judged hoys one year) that he was one of the most exciting prospects she had seen in a very long time!!! and he's been refered to as a 'proper arab' And it's unusal as he's pure egyptian too!!!

My friend used to own a part bred Akhal-Teke but she only did unaffs as it was TERRIFIED of water it was so funny bless it ha ha!!! Gorgeous horsey though!!!

xx

No, I didn't think he rode like an arab at all, but I would be comparing it the 2 polish arabs I had and they were not like normal arabs to ride!

As lovely as they are to look at and obvious exceptions that can jump and do dressage, I wouldn't have thought they were the ideal breed to buy if you particularly wanted to get higher up the levels in eventing. They were very much designed for long distance across Russia.

For what its worth, one of my arabs did very well at dressage, had quite a natural flair for it so I am not anti different breeds doing dressage and the such, each is an individual but I wouldn't think you immediately think of buying an arab if you wanted to do well at dressage. I tend to think this probably applys to Akhal-Tekes too.

Wow - your boy is stunning. Love his bloodlines too. You can't beat a bay arab IMO. I have two bay arabs, plus two greys and a chestnut (in foal to a bay purebred stallion)

I would love an AT but I agree with you, arabs are far and away my favourite breed.
