Are Apples and Carrots a part of your horses daily diet?

I don't feed them very often - they had some apples recently as my parents had a lot of windfalls! As they are mostly grass-kept, I reckon they get plenty of succulent food from the grass!

I hand feed them as treats, but can never be bothered to chop them up and add them to her feeds! She gets a couple of carrots a day and the odd apple/pear (she loves pears!), she makes really cute noises when she knows you have goodies on you!

Yep, carrots in the morning, apples in the evening feeds and as a bonus some carrots to find in the overnight hay net

T loves carrots and juicy apples and as in general I don't feed treats by hand, I like to give him some in a feed. In the summer as he only gets hard feed if he's in for a show or if he's worked hard but giving him a handful of chaff and a couple of carrots makes him think he's had something, so he's happy with that! I give him a small bit of carrot when I catch and one when I turn out too.

No, sounds cruel but they dont get apples or carrots very often & never in feeds. Well maybe occasionally if i have some carrots in & it's Christmas morning.

My boy gets a couple or three full carrots in his feed cause he likes to bite into them. He loves apples and gets them from time to time but I have to be careful as they seem to go through him and cause a bit of ring sting !!

The cook in our work canteen makes soup for about 30 people daily so she give me all her carrot & neep peelings for b. He gets a BIG handful in his feed daily & 2 whole carrots (in his bucket, not by hand) every evening after his tea and a herbal treat at the gate. He's fit, happy and healthy and has good teeth and - Yes he is spoilt!

Although he never ever bites or mooches. If he did, he wouldn't get anything.

Ditto.

I was buying apples for years and then discovered last week I had a massive apple tree groaning with juicy red apples on my land. Ah well will teach me to open my eyes.

At the moment I have 5 apple trees in my back garden that are groaning with apples so my horses are getting loads (probably more than they should!). Even when they are finished I normally buy carrots or apples. So yes I do.

Ellie gets apples and carrots on a daily basis - mostly as treats as I pass her stable. I sometimes chop it up to put in a bran mash in the winter too

Pickle gets them occastionaly, unless the yard (who supplies feed) buys carrots in bulk which they sometimes do when there are batches of strange shaped/looking carrots that supermarkets wont take!!

Betty gets an apple or carrot (whatever I've bought that week) when I turn her out, and when i go to bring her in she gets an apple or carrot as well.. Yip I am soft.. however she can sometimes be a bugger going in and out so if she's naughty then she gets no treat! I think she is starting to learn....

I give a few of them as a kind of consolation in my mini and podgy mares' feed bucket when my gelding gets a feed. For grass kept mega -doers like 2 of my 3 they make a nice change seeing as they don't get hard feed unless they need it in the depths of winter.

Yes- because feeds look brown and boring without them....also, i give carrots/apples to the little fatty instead of a feed, but at the same time the others get fed so she doesnt think she's missing out. I give them a mint when i turn them out- they stand and wait for it, and a treat when i leave the yard. I'm soft, but OH is worse....

I am given a tub of sliced carrots every morning, so mine get a few slices each every day - in feed buckets, but not necessarily with a feed (they don't need any)

I give carrots cut up twice a day in feeds and one apple, I buy a sack of carrots for £1.75 each week so there are lots to give, I did worry once when someone mentioned they had the same effect as oats which worried me or too much keretin, but when i didnt use them there was no difference in performance or behaviour, so carried on, I always use a nice long carrot to catch as thats the only way I can get near my mare. She's also a fussy eater so i am sure it helps.

Both mine get chopped carrots every day morning and night feeds and the odd apple when there is some left at home after I`ve been shopping and got fresh ones.

In the winter I get free carrots from a farmer - the bent and crooked non-eu regulation carrots get thrown out. My dogs love them as well.

i used to feed an apple daily in feed when i happened to have them.

however i dont now. i suppose they should be treats really - if i put an apple sliced in her feed, i wouldnt give her any treats. And the times i gave apples she wasnt on hard feed so in my head it sort of balanced out if that makes sense!!
