An outdoor school is as I don't want to have to travel to school or jump on a surface, not fused overmuch by a lunge pen so is an added extra rather than an essential and would never use a walker so whether a yard had one or not would be no odds to me!
Obviously facilities are nice to have if you're paying for them, but in reality I'm perfectly okay without. I have no school, but acres of grassland to school upon, and if the ground is too soft, I'll hack (my main discipline is, after all, endurance). The horses live out 24/7/365, so it is not essential that I exercise them every day (and as I work full time, plus part time, I don't actually want to have to ride every single day). As I don't have lights, I don't exercise in the evenings after work - except in summer. But that's fine by me, again, because I don't want to/can't ride every day - and I know the gang have 24 hours every day in which to stretch their legs.
All I need, and all I've got - is storage space, place to park the trailer, a lock-up/workshop with electricity (and coffee making facilities of course!) and running water. It suits me and my own horsey lifestyle down to the ground - and also allows me to keep 4 horses for only a little more cost than what would be the price of 1 at a DIY yard. In my books - perfect. I really wouldn't want/need to change what I've got for posh facilities.
This winter we could not use outdoor arena very much as could get flooded, so much rain, did not ride much, this summer we are getting indoor arena , cant wait.
If i was paying for it then yes but I`m not so it doesnt bother me.
My horses are at home, I`ve got a space between barns I can use to school or pop a jump..... and I have 3 beaches within hacking distance, this incorporates a warm up to get there, some schooling on the beach and a cool down on the way home I find my horses alot more responsive and happier when ridden this way...
have been on big yards with all singing and dancing facilities and the old female dogs (if you get my drift)
now on my own no facilities, (built my own round pen, marked out school, and made own jumps) and am happy as a lark, and funnily enough so are my horses
and lights in a school, well I drive my car in and chuck the lights on
all I have supplied is running water but then I do pay £100 for 8 acres lol!
