I put one of my horses up for sale at the weekend and had lots of phone calls on the day his ad went on the internet but now I am getting nothing! Is this typical? He's on HorseMart but I'm thinking of putting him on HorseQuest as well. Do you think it is worth putting ads in different places?

I think it's much like selling a house in the summer - there is an inevitable slow down due to people going on holiday etc.

You're probably right. I am just impatient for him to sell so that I can buy my Highland pony. If he doesn't sell soon I will start having second thoughts and may end up keeping him but OH will have a fit if I end up with 3 horses. He thinks 2 is bad enough.

Do you have a link to the advert at hand?
Maybe we could give you some feedback as to whether there is anything that could be amended to show your boy at his best.

Is he good to box/shoe/clip? Why is he suitable for riding club activities, what has he done at riding club? What is he like in traffic? These are the questions I would expect to see in the advert, if they are not stated I would wonder why! He looks nice good luck selling him

You also say he is snaffle mouth but you are riding in a 3 ring gag thingy bit

i never like ads that say health problems and owner moving away. i would not even phone them up

xninax, I don't understand why yours isn't selling, nice pictures and a very reasonable price

Clementine..I prefer to see a picture that gives an indication of movement, if your horse has done RCor competed at all it would help to be more specific..can you add more pictures or link a video? That might help.

ZigZag - all good points. He is no longer ridden in a 3 ring gag but he was when I first got him. I knew that was one mistake I'd definitely made but none of the other pics which I have are any good. I will re-photograph him again when the weather is better and maybe get a shot of him jumping instead?

He's good to box, shoe and clip. I will add that to the advert. I've never taken him out in heavy traffic because we are in a v rural area but he sees plenty of tractors and stuff. That's why I left out any comments on traffic.

The health problem thing was my trainer's idea. It is true that I hurt my back shortly after getting him although it was nothing to do with him. My back is now a lot better but I can't get on Ollie from the ground that is why I am looking for a smaller horse. Also, I want more of a happy hacker type and Ollie is more of a competition type horse. He is still sane if you don't work him but I feel that he needs someone to do a bit more with him than I want to do. I hate competing.

The riding club bit was also my instructor's idea. I think it is meant to suggest that he is not a new Olympic prospect? Could be wrong?

I'd say exactly what he's done (how high he's jumped ect) and also I'd try and include a video of him working - On Horsemart, the horses with vids seem to sell really quickly... Could be a coincidence, but it's worth a try

I am not very good at films but I will try to get one of my instructor jumping him. She is a way better rider than me. I would be worried that people would be looking at my rubbish riding and not at the horse if I am in the video.

Maybe the weather is putting people off, and the price of hay/hay shortage , people might be worried taking on a horse

Seconded, if you were closer I'd probably have a look at him.

Actually there is a lady on our yard looking for something like your chap I think and she's visiting a dealer in Yorkshire this weekend.

Have printed the ad for her, leave it with me....

Hello

I think he is nice but a little bit over priced - I think. 3k is what those types are going for in west yorkshire...

I think your instructor has advised very wrongly to put illness forces sale etc ..... if you look at horse mart every other bugger has put that or owner going abroad - there is nothing wrong with being honest about saying - you dont want him anymore as you want something else ! Good luck!! I hope you get highland pony!!! x

With regards to the TB that is on horsemart on here too 2.5K !! God you should get your hand bitten off for him!! He is beautiful !!

Good Luck for the pair of you!!

The gag photo was the least blurry one I could find. He was put in that bit for a few weeks after I got him but we realised that it wasn't necessary so he's not in it any longer. I will tty to get more accurate pics and a video tomorrow with any luck if it isn't chucking it down with rain.

custardsmum - thanks for that!

Honestly, I would say firstly to drop your price slightly. If you took it to the £3000 mark you may have more bites.

The picture does the horse no favours. If you are doing a standing shot, what I suggest is you take the rider and tack away. I like to see an alert horse and be allowed to judge his conformation without tack on. As horsemart allows you more than one, I would suggest a trot and a jumping or hacking photo, to give potential purchasers an idea.

Try and get the photos taken outside, with a decent background and try and get some brightness. Otherwise bays tend to fade into the background.

Thanks browbrow. I am very willing to negotiate on price. I was worried that if I put what I really want for him people will try to knock a lot off that and then I wouldn't get what I think he is worth. Can you tell I've never sold a horse before?!

Thanks M_H_B. I will have a rethink on price if I don't get any more viewings this weekend. I have one lined up already but am hoping for a few more. Everyone else has also mentionned the photos so I will definitely attend to that as soon as the rain stops. I look like a sack of spuds on him anyway despite everything else so that in itself may be putting some people off.

Dont worry

I know peeps are going on about the pictures which they are right but look at some of the crap pics on horsemart!! Its not that bad but could be changed

I would prob put him up for 3.5 and put what he comes with i.e what rugs and what the tack is like and also put - open to offers but non of this 'home more important that price' rubbish as thats over used in selling horses

You could put 'more pics on request - please email!

If you like highlands - try a dales too - BEAUTIFUL!!! and Fells but Fells are a bit more fiesty and smaller (but my favourite! x)

Good Luck!

Cheers browbrow. I had a DalesX before I got this one and I loved her to bits. Plus I could get on her from the ground so I wouldn't have had a bad back if I'd been able to keep her. Unfortunately she was on loan and I moved house but she had to stay on her livery yard.

Please don't shout at me, but I remember several months back that you had problems with this horse - I remember helping out with a few ideas. Are these problems now sorted?

The one in the photo WAS the one with a problem several months ago. I remember the horse - relatively young, taking the p a little with a slightly less experienced rider. Didn't say it was a problem horse, just that she had had a problem with it SOME MONTHS AGO!!!! Didn't know there was a new one with a problem as well. In fact, not sure I even knew she had a new one!
