Are hunts out in snow, icy conditions or not?

VAH hasn't been out since 31 Jan :-(

Got cancelled today due to frozen ground- really hoping Saturday will be on...

I miss my hunting but i dont want to f*ck up my horse or risk hunt staff in unsafe conditions- after all its not been ok to go for a pootle round the woods where i am - let alone hooning around after hounds!

We went on foot in the snow on Saturday - great, great fun esp. on the quad but got in trouble for throwing snowballs and sledging down hills yelling a lot.

South Dorset out this Tues and today. Seems fine down here.

We're in Cambridgeshire and hounds were last out for a proper mounted turn out on the 31st. They cancelled last Saturday due to thick snow, and have had 2 Wednesdays on foot. Hoping that the weather forecast for heavy snow and frosts is wrong so that Saturday will go ahead.

If you have a meet in mind to attend, best give the secretary a buzz and see what the situation is on the ground. A lot of hunts run text messaging alerts to distribute the decision to cancel, delay the start or change the venue as early and as fast as possible on the morning. If they know you are planning to attend , they'll be better placed to let you know the score.

k9h was saying they've only been out about 4 times since boxing day!

we've not had many more days than that either, but then we live in the frozen north, so what do we expect? :)

ETA - frost, ice and snow are generally considered to be not good for hounds, nevermind horses and riders!

The croome were hunting today, not sure if the North cots were out yesterday though.

Hopefully the weather will cheer up by next week though *fingers crossed*

I spoke too soon, started snowing shortly after I posted this and it hasn't let up all evening. Doesn't look too promising for weekend activity.

Just wondering if there is any evidence of frosty ground being harder on bigger hounds like foxhounds than beagles. One of the columnists in The Master's Voice raised this question in the lastest issue.

Aye your right!

We have only had 4 days since Boxing day! 27th Dec, 17th Jan, 27th Jan & then 7th Feb on foot as too hard for horses.

Though if it gets really frosty hard on top, then hounds do not go out as it cut's the pads up & so you lame hounds so sadly it is not worth the risk.

It's thawing slowly! Fitz went out on foot, really funny to see the people who are normally mounted puffing along at the back!! I think they will appreciate their neds more after following our huntsman across a rather sticky ploughed field!
