I thought that an ISH was a sport horse bred in ireland... but I have since had someone say to me its an ID x TB (bred anywhere). Which is right?

Sporthorse bred in Ireland I do believe - according to passports, but people do term an ID x TB as ISH (because thats mostly what is bred in Irl)

I think they have to be bread in Ireland, but aren't necessarily full Irish breeding - i.e. they can have some warmblood in them.

Mine is from Ireland and is IDxTB, although not a strait x if that makes sense..

It doesn't seem to be a very strict breed TBH, I think the Irish possibly stick ISH on lots of passports in the hope they can flog them for more money!

A bit like all Irish horses have hunted and all Irish TB's have won Pt to Pt's in Ireland.

Its to do with the breeding i.e. the horse must be by an ID stallion or by a mare by an RID stallion.

Taken from IDHS website:
IDHS(GB) SPORT HORSE REGISTERS

SHR (Sport Horse Register)
For stallions (with proven Irish Draught breeding in their pedigree) that pass the SHR conformation inspection and pass the veterinary inspection.
For progeny by SHR or RID stallions out of non-ID mares, or out of identified SHR or ID mares by stallions (other than G2/G3ID or G2/G3SH) registered with a recognised Breed Society.

G2SH (Grade Two ID Sport Horse Register)
For stallions that fail the SHR conformation inspection, but pass the veterinary inspection.
For progeny by G2SH stallions out of identified SHR or ID mares (including mares graded RID, AID, SID).
For progeny by G2SH or G2ID stallions out of non-ID mares, or out of G2SH or G2ID mares by any stallions (other than G3ID or G3SH).

G3SH (Grade Three Sport Horse Register)
For stallions that pass or fail the SHR conformation inspection and fail the veterinary inspection.
For progeny by G3SH stallions out of identified SHR or ID mares (including mares graded RID, AID, SID).
For progeny by G3SH or G3ID stallions out of non-ID mares, or out of G3SH or G3ID mares by any stallions

An ISH is just the Irish term for a warmblood. Cavalier Royale - a very influential ISH Stallion is actually a Holsteiner.

An ISH is a sport horse bred in Ireland by an Irish approved stallion...hence why foals bred by Guidam etc here can get "green" books
