this is my first time owning a mare but she seems to be really dirty, she wees in her tail and seems to have dry urine and "lady juice" for want of a better word all down her legs.
she gets these wet patches in between her back legs, they look like sweaty patches but smell of urine, i regularly wash her off as she generally smells with it all down her back legs and tail, but i cant imagine shel appreciate it in the freezing weather!
shes 7 btw.
its not poo, her bum is clean and poo is normal.

Is she on haylage? I owned a mare who was a bit "loose" on it and it made poo juice run down her legs like in your photos.

yes she is, has been for some time now although the most recent bale is abit nicer, she isnt normally this bad but she always has dry urine down her legs and she smells because of it, (sounds awfull lol!) it goes very dry and crusty so i use shampooh to get it off as it doesnt brush off to well.

Would say thats what it is. Try mixing the haylage with hay, that worked for our mare. Or could you let it dry out a bit before feeding it? NAF also do a product called Haylage Balancer or something like that. I have a feeling its for horses who are a bit runny with haylage. I may be wrong but that may help.

My mare is not on haylage and never has been and she's been like that for all the time I've had her - around 20 years!!!

Keep up the good work with the sponge(s)!

glad its not just her! i tell you, latex gloves are a god send! hands stay nice and warm in the freezing water!
the haylage is very dry, not as nice as weve had, the last bale was prety much like hay but this one is abit more sweeter.
we have 2 other mares on the yard who are prety clean, the old mare would be mortified if she peed on herself! grace absolutley drenches her tail!

my thoughts too doris! hayledge has nothing to do with it, its just mares! i had one mare that was in season all the time! and she would have ''lady juice'' down her all the time, more so when she was out with other horses she was a bit of a tart really! :p

How old is your mare? If its urine she is slightly incontenant.

- is she in foal? - lots of pregnant mares - especially during the later months of pregnancy become slightly incontenant and some remain incontenant post foaling!!!!

If she starts to burn between her back legs / boobs just put some zinc or sudocream on there!

she is 7. she had a foal when she was 3.

My mare looks just the same when she is in season, she smells horrible and her tail and back legs are sticky and it's hard to wash out. The joy of a mare I'm afraid!

Yep, mine isn't quite as bad as that but not cool is it! After washing, spray some coat conditioner all over the back, it stops the 'lady juice' sticking so to speak and then girly doesn't stink so bad all the time - LOL

Ellie gets pretty bad during her season - I have to wash it off regularly as it makes her awfully sore :( We used to have a Welsh pony mare who was a nightmare, regardless of in season or not. In spite of living to the age of 34, she used to flirt and squirt at everything, and the fact she was grey didnt help - her back end was horrible! Little tart :p

I wonder if you could get it clean and dry, then dust the hair with Keratex Mud Shield powder?

Might sound odd, but hear me out :p

It is so good at stopping mud sticking to legs that maybe it would stop the wetness going into her hair and make it easier to wipe off just with baby wipes or a damp cloth over the winter? Might be worth a try. Nicer for you and her. Tail would obviously have to be rinsed though.

I have to say I have always had mares and never had one that gets like that, so I think you are unlucky!

last time I knew of a mare like this was at a riding school abut 20 years ago.

All I will say is please use warm water over the winter!! the poor love won't enjoy having her ladybits washed with freezing cold water!!

Once she's clean and dry, try puttng some baby oil on your hands and then wiping them downher legs. I use it on my boys tail to stop it glogging with mud and getting tangled and a week after application it's still soft and relatively clean...

Yep, sorry, you just have to live with it, I find , once its washed of, a generous spray of any coat shine or some such helps, makes brushing the next lot off easier. Baby wipes clear it nicely too, and makes the coat shine and stops you hands getting so cold:(

Hmm, having read everyones answers, maybe it's mares that have had foals who are more prone to this, plus my mother reminded me my old mare did not have this little problem, but she never had a baby

Mrs P has never had a baby, but she really wants one :o This was her back leg after her herd moved next door to the geldings

I washed her bum & legs every day for 3 days then gave up! I don't call it lady juice - I have a more basic term for it which is not to be repeated on a civilised forum ;)

My mare was a really mucky madam (she is now in foal, yippee :))
I found baby lotion was really good for getting her clean, just with a dry cloth when the weather is a bit chilly. Much cheaper than anything with a picture of a horse on it as well;)

My mare may be a manker, but I love my mares
