The thought of putting my horse on loan is a thought I don't really want to consider, but its something that may well just have to happen.

Are people prepared to take a horse on full loan that must stay at its present yard? I have 3 horses so really want to keep them all together because they are all best mates and the "herd" is happy, and also would be able to keep an eye on him.

I just wondered if this is something people are actually happy to do as most ads i've seen from people wanting horses on loan, they want to move them to "their" yard.

Depends on the circumstances really i guess. Personally i wouldnt as i have other horses at my own yard and would want a loan horse to move to my yard but other people who are just loaning the one horse may be perfectly happy with doing it. Does your current yard have facilities?

i have had my pony on full loan to be kept at present yard and had loads of interest. People didnt seem to mind that she had to stay where she is.

If i wasnt selling her i an confident i could get another loaner very quickly.

Why are there no livery charges?
It depends what the loanee wants to do with the horse I guess. If I wanted to school a horse, I wouldn't want to be at that yard. Personal circumstance. You'd be better off looking for a happy hacker to remain at present yard :)

I know some people actually prefer it. I've known of competent 'riding school' people who would love to have a horse on loan but would be worried about taking it away and wouldn't know where to take it to anyway. If they were looking, they would prefer not to worry about finding a home but would still be capable riding and looking after it.

I suppose it all depends whether there is anyone looking at the moment that is local enough to keep it at your yard. It wouldn't bother me if I were looking and the yard was close enough and I think lots of people do loan under this arrangement. I would try an ad if you have to go down that route and see what the response is then reassess from there.

Its mine and my friends land, we use my land in summer and hers in winter so no livery fees, just shoes, hay, feed wormers etc

There is a menage within 15mins hack that can be hired for a pretty reasonable fee which is a bonus I suppose. All mine are competed so we just tend to school while hacking if that makes sense. Horse is a total bombproof schoolmaster, he is the only sensible one I have which is why he has to be the one on loan, but as he is one we would never ever sell I wouldnt want him off the yard.

hmmm might try an advert, local tack shops etc best? never had much luck with anything in the internet!

ditto this.^^

However, I am looking for a loan horse but want to keep it at the yard where I am now. (a) because it's next door to my house and (b) because it has all the facilities and off road hacking that I want to use. I am able to give references and an owner would be more than welcome to 'vet' the yard before letting me have their horse and could visit at any time.

You really do shrink your market if the horse has to remain where it is, and there are plenty of lovely people looking for a loan horse but maybe would not be able to come to your yard.

Your best bet would be to advertise locally and see who you find.

A few years back I needed to put my mare on full loan and insisted that she was kept at her current yard so that the YO could keep an eye and let me know of any concerns. Had no trouble finding someone and this worked really well.

I'm in the process of doing just that, if it ever thaws so I can ride. He is on full loan but since they own the yard no charges for livery :D I know 4 others were interested in him.
Try local websites, preloved, ad trader and tack/feed shops for advertising.

Just had a peek on internet, am totally suprised at the lack of adverts in my area for people wanting horses on loan, I remember when I was younger looking for a horse to loan and I had adverts everywhere and there seemed to be loads of people wanting horses to ride and no body wanting any help

Typical that there are loads of people wanting horses to loan where I used to live!

I will keep looking and see if I can come across the "right" person for my fella. There must be loads out there not far away... :-(
