Are some horses naturally headshy?

my coblet is slightly headshy, just in that he doesn't really like us kissing his nose, and god forbid you blow in it, although he's quite happy for other horses to. I was wondering if this is likely to stem from being hit when he was younger or do some horses just not like you doing this? we've had him for 5 years and since the day we got him he didn't like it, and he was 4 when we got him so there shouldn't have been too much opportunity for abuse. anyone else's horses like this?

Well it depends very much how they were treated as a youngster I think. Both my gelding and my mare we think were twitched on the ear as young horses and as a result don't like you faffing too much, they never like me being overly loving although my mare will give me a kiss every night and my coloured loves me when it suits him!!
We have have the connieXtb since a foal and he is the most dosile and loving creature ever, but he was always handled and got used to people being gentle around his head, whereas my other two remember how not nice people were around their heads.

Merlin hates his ears being touched..... no reason that I know of, unless previous owner twitched him by them (possible but not probable) He has nothing actually wrong with them, and will let you brush them after a fashion. Its like he expects something awful to happen but then relaxes when it doesnt.

Likes having his nose blown into though

Had a horse on loan donkeys years ago, that if you blew into his nostrils, would take your face off!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks guys, yeah I'd always thought it was something to do with before we got him cos he came like that lol. that's horrible, does twitching their ears have more of an effect than their noses then? ouch! and aww lucky you rosiiepimms, I'd love to have had our boy from a foal, bet there's a much better bond at the end of it all
