Are the "how much" etc posts advertising ?

I think if people do use them for advertising they should be aware it can be a two-edged sword, as sometimes the threads actually end up highlighting the animal's weak points!

IMO if you go to horsemart or similar ( horses for sale site ) Type in a search exactly your horses discription, height, age, breed colour etc you will get alot of horses similar, browse through them then you can get a rough guide of price from there if you really have no idea of how much...Seems silly really though, if you bought the horse you know how much you payed for it and can get a rough guide from there...

Little unfair guys - people tend to ask for help when horses aren't selling - and have to say the advice given on the advert/pictures is pretty good on here... if I was going to sell I would ask for advice as I have been highly impressed to date! Fair point about the valuation but the wording is altogether another matter!

I've posted a how much today and am genuinely interested - she'll be going on HHO and horsemart anyway but just don't know for how much!

Sometimes i think yes, but it is difficult to know how to price in the current market, I keep thinking about asking about my horse, hes not for sale but Id like a valuation, am put off though as it looks like advertising

I think some maybe are advertising, however ive recently posted one (not something i normally do in fact don't think i ever have) & it is a genuine how much as i was trying to get a rough idea of what money was involved so i could sit down & work out what to do.

I could not find anything similar on the internet.

I'm one of the culprits you refer to sm :o however I wasn't openly advertising. I'm not an active member of any equine community/club/yard so I posted my "how'd you sell a horse in a market that's flooded" question to gain thoughts and ideas from the plethora of people on here as there are so many members and it's accessible. I have to say I didn't originally post a link but many asked for info/ad info so I did post a link, admittedly willingly ;)

I agree with the comments it can have disadvantages - possible issues are unearthed  I personally haven't gained by posting the sneaky advert :) just H&H have missed out as I've not paid them to put it in their mag but used their forum.

I think it's difficult at the moment as people like myself are trying to sell in a flooded market so we are seeking as many opinions as possible to ensure we have the best possible ad. However everyone has their individual opinion and what one person suggests another will disagree. It all helps I think :D

I may be considered a culprit in some respects as well, but if I am, I wasn't trying to advertise. A forum is a good place to find people who may be interested etc. As people have pointed out it can go badly wrong. I do feel a bit guilty :( so when I am seriously considering selling my horse I will put an advert in magazine! Only thing is classified in H+H always has very expensive flashy horses, which mine is not!

I think in most cases its at most gentle advertising, after all. most peeps on here have a horse or access to one so arent in the market for the sellers wares. And generally a how much gets a fairly lowish reply from most peeps so that wont help their marketing ;-)

I think if someone takes to proverbial in blatentness then the post should be removed but I think its quite natural to want to know how much horsie may have retained/gained value.

Well, i did my first ever genuine how much last year, and actually sold my horse through the post, i wished i had neber done it, she went to an awful home and was there all of 2 months! Anyway that's another story. So just be careful everybody

I think it is, but when it cost us well over £100 to advertise in H&H without any consultation to advert design, price, wording etc - and not get a single phone call, I can see why H&H want to stomp it out.

The more uneducated sellers who pay those sorts of prices just to get ignored, the more money they make. The more horses that sell for free through the forums, the less money they make. Simples.

Whatever it is, I find it fascinating to see how much people value various horses, so I am happy to continue looking at these posts.

Maybe it is in some cases, I dont know. Even then I dont really care, and for people who genuinely want advice - isnt that what this forum is suposed to be all about?

As hessy says - its interesting to see how people value horses as I wouldnt have a clue what to go on myself.
