Hi

I am a tall rider, 5'11 and currently weigh 16stone. I am trying to lose some weight, but I'm a size 16 so by no means the roundest rider I've ever seen.:D However I desperately want to get back in the saddle and am struggling to find anything big enough to ride.

Most riding schools have weight limits of 13 stone, which I can understand, having worked in a riding school I've seen how taxing the work can be without carrying heavy weights. So I am unable to get lessons anywhere to iron out my rusty bits.:)

Ideally I would like to get a horse to share, something 16hh plus with a bit of bone obviously, hunter type.

Am I being unrealistic thinking that there is a horse like this out there?

I owned an ex-racehorse before uni, when I was admittedly a bit lighter, but I was still close to 14 stone then, and although he was a typical 17hh chaser type he was pure thoroughbred and he carried me quite happily out hunting.

Ive ridden since I was a child and used to teach in a riding school up till uni, so have ridden various types of horses, therefore am not like the dead weight of a beginner.

Are horse owners willing to take this into consideration? Or am I likely to always get dismissed at too heavy on the numbers?

I don't think you are being unrealistic at all, there are plenty of people who are well over 16 st who ride. If you were a gent I'm almost positive nobody would give a second thought. At your height then of course you are going to look better on a taller horse but you certainly needn't start eyeing up shires!:D

There are quite a few horses on our yard which would cope with your height and weight. No idea if any of them are up for share though. I bet its the same on most yards.

Why not put an ad in the local feed places like Blue Barn, Bardsey Mill, Wharfedale Equestrian (to name a few) you could get lucky. There is also the Leeds Equestrian Forum on Facebook.

If you find a horse on one of the larger yards you will find plenty of freelance instructors visiting to arrange lesson with.

Thanks for the advice, I was beginning to think I would be stuck on cobs for the rest of my days (not that there's anything wrong with cobs) they re just not really my favoured breed. Will def look into facebook forum, have posted ad on preloved as well.

Plenty. The horse I used to share, 16.2 maxi cob had a rider of a similar stature to you after me and she was much better on him than I was. I was also offered a 17.1 ID whose owner was larger and I know of a 16.3 which would be fine for a bit larger rider.

Thanks. Hopefully there's someone local who fits the bill. Have posted on Leeds equestrian forum on facebook, so will see from there. Appreciate all your responses its given me a bit more faith in the horsey world up north. :-D

Yes I have just seen your ad, good luck.

You would have been welcome to ride mine but I have two cobs :D :D

And a warmblood which doesn't have a lot of bone and requires a rider with a death wish (IMO, daughter wouldn't agree)

What a shame, we have justed permanently loaned out my old boy down to Essex from harrogate! He was a 17hh Irish sports horsesbd I am your twin :) I have just bought a 17hh warmblood who is perfect for me. They are out there, good luck!

Ok, down south, but big 17hh ID mare at my yard would take a rider like you, no bother. They're out there, get looking! Preloved worked for me when I was looking for a sharer.
