I love looking at bits and finding out their different ways of working etc (I know its slightly sad!) Are there any good detailed books I could look at/buy?

Highly recommend The Complete book, it may be slightly dated now because bits are changing all the time but the basic information is there, excellent book written by someone who knew what he was talking about. I would recommend any of his books =)

I agree - I have this book and its very addictive to pick up and read.

As above - Elwyn Hartley Edwards wrote the complete book of bits and bitting and it covers all the fundamentals and is pretty relevant still.
