does anybody know of , or has anybody ever got , a grant to start a horse business ? i know there are small business grants out there ( somewhere ) but in this country equine activities dont seem to be encouraged so much. any adviced gratefully recieved ! :)

You can get a small business grant or loan for any business if you can illustrate a potentially lucrative business model/plan, with realistic figures for potential income and growth over 1, 3 and 5 years, backed up by research in your chosen industry.

I would suggest you go away and do some homework - self employment is very "dog eat dog" and if you need to come onto an internet forum to ask about the first steps, you're not ready to approach anyone about a grant yet...

thank you but i am already self employed. my boyfriend has just bought a place with 10 stables and was wondering what to do with them as hes not the least bit horsey and his sister is leaving school this year and was pondering on some kind of business.

i would suggest speaking to your local council as grants are very localised, some are available if for example it would benefit your local community ie employment etc. Usually they will expect you to match them financially you will need a sound business plan, but it is worth enquiring.

yes absolutely munchkin but i am not prepared to bankroll her and nor is my boyfriend as he sees horses as a complete waste of money. i only asked a question and dont know what ive done to obviously annoy you with your sarcastic replies.are you having an off day or are you like this with everyone or is it just me ?

Go onto the businesslink website. There is a whole section on grants including a 'calculator' to see if you are eligible for anything.

Much of it seems to depend on where you are based and of course what sort of business you are proposing. We've never been elgible for diddly squat as based in the 'affluent South East and in manufacturing which they seem entirely uninterested in.

Good luck :)

I simply answered the question. You (or she) needs to go and do some serious homework to a) work out what she wants to do and how she would make a profit from it and b) who to contact to present this idea in hope of a grant.

I'm sorry if you wanted a fluffy reply but if you call Business Link and tell them your boyfriend has 10 stables and his sister wants to do something with them, I don't think you'll get very far, that's all.

You obviously were offended by my suggestion as you are already self employed. Therefore, surely you are already in a position to advise her about the research she needs to do from a financial perspective?

Not sarcastic, just realistic.
