Are there any stirrups that are good for injured Achilles?

I pulled my Achilles running a year ago, & it's more or less settled, but a bit grumbly. I'm doing a BUPA run assessment next week, to learn how to manage it a bit better.

However, it occurred to me this week that it's actually riding that's aggravating it more than running!

Are any of the modern stirrups - hinged; the ones with part of the side replaced with chain; those funny ones with a long footplate, etc - any good for a grumbling Achilles?

Thank you!

Sprenger bow balance have solved a multitude of joint problems - and made the lower leg position more stable. they're not cheap - but I'd highly recommend.

Mmmm, can't remember the name of the thing, but I think a long long time ago someone mentioned it on here........ its a kind of stirrup which basically has a tread which supports the whole foot - its not cheap if my memory serves me right, about £100 or thereabouts, but this would support you I would guess. I think some top showjumpers have used them plus obviously RDA use.

Basically, it looks like the bottom plate of a bootjack with supporting straps at either end, and are supposed to give excellent stability etc. They would be especially good for you OP I would think coz the bottom "sole" of it supports the whole foot from toe to hell, whereas with a traditional stirrup only the ball of the foot contacts with the stirrup, which then means additional strain on the Achilles tendon.

Oh gosh wish I could remember the name of the flippin' thing!!! Anyone else know what the heck I am talking about????

Oh yes, I know the ones you mean...they're the ones I was thinking of...I can't rem what they're called either!

In my defence, it's my b'day today, so I'm a year more senile than I was yesterday!

PS eeeeeppp I've just googled the bow balance & seen how much they cost - but I got £70-worth of vouchers for the tack shop this morning as presents!

Another vote for Sprenger Bow Balance - I have a very dodgy hip and bought a pair a month ago. I can actually get off my horse now without somebody having to throw my right leg over the back for me to dismount. Worth the price imo (but yes rather eye watering)

I bought the Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups following knee surgery last September and I'd really recommend them!
Wychanger Barton were the cheapest I found at the time at about £130.

I have hip and knee issue and I bought the Royal Rider flexi ones a few weeks ago, I love them and have noticed that my knee really doesnt hurt as much as it used too when riding. They are a bit cheaper than the Bow Balance but, most importantly for me, much lighter which I prefer. Very pleased with them, planning to buy another set for my other horses saddle.

I paid £100 from my local tack shop and found them online for £105 delivered.

Oh no, too much choice! Good that people really seem to rate the newer, funkier stirrups. I was wondering if they actually made a difference, & it sounds as if they do.

When I first did my Achilles, I was properly crippled & had to ride without any stirrups at all as I simply couldn't bear any pressure on it. Then the next morning I was twice as crippled as my hips had seized up too!

Joys of being old & creaky!
