My plan of action with Sol
Opinions Please
If you don't know Sol is the 4yo in my Sig she has now been backed/broken 5 months

Now until the 1st June ..
Work Sol in the Pessoa 3 times a week
Get Sian to school Sol 3 times a week
Ask for a more active pace and sort transitions out .
Start polework and Small jumps
Send Entries for Preliminary 1 at Sunnybank
Review progress and keep too / set new goals

1st June - 14th June
Work on whatever comments made on dressage test
Work on movements for preliminary 13/18
Work on larger jumps / scary jumps
Send Entries for 3 day Show
Review progress and keep too / set new goals

14th June - 20th June
Carry on with Schooling and tweaking paces
Review progress and keep too / set new goals

20th June – 27th July
Take her to Sunnybank SJ to let her see the fillers
Make entry for Eventers Training
Send Entries for Summer 3 day show
Keep consistent work
Review progress and keep too / set new goals

27th July onwards
Carry on with work
Review progress and keep too / set new goals

Dont go planning months in advance; you never know with horses, especially youngsters! Your plan sounds good, but dont get despondent if it goes awry, for that I'm afraid is the nature of equines! You may find she progresses quicker than you plan; you may find she takes longer. Just take it steady, and enjoy her - the baby stages are lovely, and you will both learn so much

What has she achieved already?
3 paces and any pole work or jumping?
any dresage test run throughs at home?

its a very proscriptive plan and IMHO does not allow much felxibility and could read sa a plan to meet the 3 day show rather than proceed according to her progress. She mal take to poles easliy, or be worried by them.

I woudl ot plan to worj on comments from one dresage test, thye are likely to be quite generalised and one judges view, wh will not know her level of experince, age and level of training. Read them see if you and trainer agree, then deicide if to use a guide, but you may decide they are not 'to work on' at this stage in her education.

Nothing wrong with goal setting at all, as long as you dont let yourself get upset if it doesnt go as you plan! Ellie had just turned 5 when I got her, and although I had no structured plan as such, my ultimate goal was to qualify her for Trailblazers within two years, which we did

There were ups and downs along the way, but I do believe you need some amount of structure, whether that be competitive or otherwise.

She looks a beautiful girl!

She is currently happy in all three paces and has been over poles .
The 3day show is an unaff. sj , dressage and showing show . (she went last year to do the inhand classes )
I just wanted her to go in P18 and the inhands again .
 
I would swap the Pessoa for hacking - keep her happy and going forwards - too much school work will turn her sour. It reads like 6 days a week in the school - apologies if I have got that wrong.

Very good point .. So would 4days in school 1/2 days hacking be ok . So two days lunged , 2 days schooled , 2 days hacked ?
 
Never, ever, ever, EVER plan!!!! If there's something I've learnt from having an injured horse for a whole year and thinking about 100 times "maybe she can come back into work next month" it's NEVER PLAN!!! I really did think last week that I was going to get there, I got all the way up to the yard with Maiden's bridle only to bring a lame horse in from the field. I am trying again in a few weeks' time but I am NOT going to plan a THING this time, it's just tempting fate

Oh and as a side-note, I also thought the same thing as DD - six days a week in the school for a youngster is a bit much IMO, you'd be much better off out hacking

ditto this, absolutely. I would not be using a pessoa that much on a 4 yr old anyway. (Or even an 8 yr old tbh!)
 
I may be lazy, but I'd probably only do a couple of sessions of schooling per week...and only school til he/she has learned one new thing, then quit. At that age, their concentration span is very short, and their bodies very weak, so they tire quickly.
I'd hack out more often...agree with DD - Pessoas on a 4 yr old are, IMO, vile.

Does Sol ever get hacked out?

I was recently criticised for allowing my daughter to ride three times a week in a school for half an hour at a time on her 5 1/2 year old pony.

I've dropped her down to two half an hour sessions, one flat work and one jumping. The consensus of opinion was that we might make him school sour if she kept up with three times a week.

He gets hacked out three times a week and two days off. Not sure if that's a decent balance for us, but anything less and he starts messing about. Last year we were advised on here that she needed to ride him more as he was going through an "awkward" stage. It's very confusing to know what's right and wrong. He was turned away for almost four months last autumn and has been back in work now since January. He came back into work with a renewed enthusiasm and a better work ethic. He's such a willing and happy pony now. He loves his hacking but also enjoys his schooling. She doesn't ask alot of him. It's all pretty basic at the moment. Walk, trot and canter with a couple of small cross poles.

If you're happy and your horse is happy you have to go with the flow. So long as you're prepared to take a step back if Sol struggles with any pressure that is put on her with her work.

No , not really .
The reason is the yard is on a very very busy main road . And I don't usually have anyone to nanny us along the road and hack out with us , so I'd rather not risk it . I used to hack out alone when I was a a quiet country lane yard but now the road is just to busy .

Try to school her mentally rather than physically - and there's so much you can teach her on a hack - you can do pretty much everything that you can do in a school, and more besides - going first, last, going beside another horse, meeting traffic, people, bikes, etc. You can work her on the bit, on a longer rein, start lateral work with simple leg yields, do nice halt transitions at junctions etc....if you have suitable hacks you can do nice canterwork.

No no I do agree . She hasn't ever been on the pessoa setting that is the 'ridden horse' one I only ever do it on the introductory setting (as thats the only one I can figure out

Totally agree with you. I think it's important for all horses to spend time out of the school environment, especially a youngster.

I'm not a pessoa fan myself. Have never used one. I'm sure they have their place for the experienced handlers/trainers but I am not one of them.

That's a real shame. I'm afraid I would want/insist on a yard with acceptable hacking if it was me and my horse. Then again, I love to hack. It's mentally stimulating for the horse and keeps their minds fresh inbetween schooling. (well that's my opinion, although I'm sure others would disagree).

Being asked to school correctly is actually very physically demanding for a young horse. The chance to chill out and stretch on a nice hack must relieve any tension that is built up in the school.

There is LOVELY hacking the other side of the main road and large country park but its having the sensible horse to help with any trouble-shooting and just getting Sol more confident .
 
I also adore lists ( must try and stop the amount of paper i waste and time at work ) but they never go to plan, work, life gets in the way as does money in my case and then thats before the fact that horses are a bit unreliable and are bound to do something to cock it up!! I think as long as you take it as it comes and progress the horse as it feels to you then thats the best unwritten plan, i think a strict plan will only make you stressy and disheartened if it doest go to plan! ( past experience! )
