Are they liable for ruining my rugs?

I have 4 rugs that were washed and reproofed (twice as I took them back and complained they were not waterproof and they agreed to reproof them again).

They are still not waterproof. All rugs were really expensive and I paid £80 total for the reproofing and washing.

I enquired as to their methods and temperature of washing and reproofing. It says quite clearly on label of all the rugs that they should be washed at 30 degrees. Company have since told me that their washing machine was "stuck on 40 degrees" by someone on the phone - I do not have this in writing, though.

Any thoughts?

Terrible - I would expect them to refund the cleaning/reproofing bill at the very least.

I would buy a reproofing spray now and spray them yourself.

OP Could you pm me the name of the people who washed your rugs. I have had one that was supposed to be reproofed and wasn't waterproof. I wonder if it is the same company? I ended up buying a spray on reproofer and doing it myself as I couldn't afford to be without the rug.

I had hundreds of pounds worth of rugs ruined a few years ago. Actualy shrunk some, and others were less water proof than when I sent them. I wanted not only refunding of their bill but compensating for the rugs. They told me where to go. So, rather than pay even more money to take legal action I left cards in local shops telling people to contact me for details of a local rugwash company to avoid if they wanted their rugs back in good condition. Within 8 hours the company had contacted me, refunding all my costs and paying a good portion of replacing the rugs. This was before any member of the public had contacted me. Sometimes you have to get tough to stop people walking all over you.
