Im looking to change to something with less dust for the winter as my horse seems to be eating more straw, even though he has enough hay/haylage to last him. This is now making him cough.

Ive been looking into wood pellets but am unsure how dusty they are once they have broken down or if to add some water over the bed to reduce the dust ?

How do you manage your wood bed ?

There is a liverpool wood bed thread somewhere and one recently about straw pellets, have a look through the threads shouldn't be too far down

I used them on mine and he has COPD they were great

I use comfybed on mine as was assured they were dust free....unbelievably, they weren't lying! Really good stuff and very easy to use

The only time I find my wood pellet bed gets a little dusty is in summer when he only comes in during the day. I just water it a bit from time to time and no further problems.

Here in the NW I only found the wood pellets kicked up any dust in the hight of summer and when the bed had not been touched for a while. As I have explained on the straw pellets thread, I am allergic to dust. But I have never (in 3 years) even sneezed with wood pellets.

Starting a new bed each season, I might throw a bucket of water over them. But once the bed is started, I just mixed them in dry.

I have two, very wet and dirty horses and do a full muck out each day. I like a deep bed, as I find this makes it dryer. Just remove the poop and dig for the clumped wet and then swirl the bed up so the middle gets mixed with the sides. This evens out the dryness.

These pics are from 2009, when I first started using wood pellets.

Just to show how dirty my horses are:p (note - I do make the bed deeper nowadays)

It was my thread on LWP have a look :) i love them, i have one very clean mare who always got a dusty bed on easybed and some shavings and straw yet ive been on these all summer and not dusty at all :)

The only time I find these dusty is in summer. Was having to water the bed every day. Now on shavings from local wood supplier and they are like the wood pellets once broken down in looks and feel but a lot less dusty and a lot lot cheaper :)
