Back when I still was riding my Highland Pony, there were two tall slim women who both rode large Warmbloods and who would both laugh themselves silly every time they saw me out riding Kippen. To do this once I could have understood as I was larger back then, Kippen is almost always chubby and the two of us together was probably quite funny. But to do it each and every time, that is just plain rude.

Has or does this happen to anyone else?

I get it because I'm 6ft on my 14.3hh Sec D :-( Really upsets me. Carries me easily as I'm only 10 stone but because I look tall on him with super long legs people pass comment.

I don't think I have ever had flack for riding Fergs. Used to get it a bit on JJ when I was a teenager and friends were moving onto poncy horses (who they couldn't control!) but he's a horse anyway so that doesn't count.

I don't think anyone would dare mock me...

I think I look stupid on a 16.2 KWPN I ride regularly, and at home on the 13.2 Welsh Section B I ride just as often. Nobody says anything about either? Sometimes I simply can't choose between the Rolls Royce or the Beach Buggy... :P

I'm 5ft 2in and Ponio is 14hh so we look okay together. I've not had any flack so far - in fact one of the ladies at the yard - who has beautiful big chestnut horse has admitted she's jealous of me because she'd love to have a pony but she's too heavy for one :D

The only person who has commented is an absolute idiot any way so I really couldnt care less what her opinion is. I normally get told I made a good choice not over horsing my self and getting some thing that suits me size wise.

No, that's not very nice for you, is it? I'm sure most people know that you have a little horse because that is what you wanted, not because you couldn't possibly manage a full size beast. :)

Really?

I think you're pathetic riding little Rob. Actually I think it's quite cruel, you're far too fat for him. I also think you just can't handle a real horse

:D

People think I should have a bigger pony, I'm 5'3 and 9.6st (long dose of steroids, on a diet!) he is 13.3 and MW welsh cross. Once they see him being a idiot and carting me left right and centre they agree he's not a child's pony! When I go for a hack else where I always ask for something around 14hh as I hate big horses!

I have 2 small arabs, one who really is dinky at not quite 14h. Thankfully I'm rather small myself, and we both pass for child plus pony! However, on an endurance ride a few years ago, there were a couple of girls riding massive horses who were most put out that they couldn't keep up with us. They came flying past when we stopped for a break to kill some time, only to have us go past there exhausted horses later. Size isn't everything.
Pesonally I hate seeing kids on horses too young, unless they are super tall or riding a family owned horse.
Give me a dinky any day

I have had people ask me why did I get a 13.3 & the answer was because I fell in love with him the minute I saw him on the internet. Then last year when I was lookign for somethign to bring on to compete I got a 14.2 4yr old (I was looking for something bigger, but again fell in love) & a friend of mine said to me my mum keeps asking me why you got something small when your tall & you already have a pony, so my repsonse was I don't have to explain myself to others, but I got him as he was everything I wanted & it's no one else buisness what I buy, I am not out to compete high level I just out to have fun. I do get the odd comment, but I am happy so the horse so nothing else matters.

Get comments about when am I selling samba all the time I'm 5 6" she's 14.1hh I'm about a size 14. Apparantly I need a nice16hh hunter, I would love one but at the same time I really don't think I can break the bond me and samba have.

Ha I do fail at jumping horses :o major mental block after a witch of an instructor at college . Your far taller than me so you must be reportably cruel :p oh no wait the little people of youtube have already done that :D and your getting smaller and smaller ponies each time :p.

Kippen is a large horse who was squished to make him shorter. There is nothing little about him except his height 14.1hh and length (5'9" rug). Normal Roma full size horse boots won't even go on his legs as he has so much bone. He has enormous hooves. Wears a shortened Warmblood bridle and has a six inch mouth. He is incredibly wide. Pulls like a train. Is very keen and brave. I love him.

I think being laughed at was just sheer rudeness.

Yer, I started on horses as a kid and graduated to ponies as an adult

Confused much? :D

Oh I've been reported :p I'm just evil. I made Fergs carry 20 stone y'know  :D And I can't jump anything properly so I'm saying nothing :p

Ha just proving that ponies are far more complicated than horses :D

20 stone!!! who would have stood and watched such a thing whithout reporting it there and then :p

I look quite young, so don't get flack for having a pony, however, when I started in RC first, got a lot of comments saying I shouldn't be competing, that I was clearly too young, so got a different sort of flack over it I suppose...

I did the same thing. My first horse was 16hh and I was a small 12 year old. He was lovely and we managed very well. Discovered ponies as an adult and they are good fun. It was sad gaining instant credibility when I started riding my Thoroughbred. To me that was an insult to all the great ponies out there.

huh. I'd rather have no credibility than the sort of credibility that is given only those on the animal whose conformation fits, really. I agree, total insult to ponies - especially since ponies are the greatest of the British breeds by far

(Not that I'm biased there!)

If I could still ride a pony, I would 100% (I'm too fat- perfect height though, scraping in at nearly 5'2!) :D

Have to say, I think Al is a lot safer now she's on her nice ex-racer, rather than the lunatic ponies- Reg is very sweet, the ponies were all clearly insane :D :D

I'm too tall (5'10) for my 14.2 conniex tb really, but i'm quite light & most of my height is legs which she takes up so don't look ridiculous. Have had the odd comment, but no ones ever commented twice lol, I find it rather rude really, so feel justified in responding in the same manner. Have cheerfully asked a fuller figured lady once if she didn't think she was too fat to ride (she wasn't) & told someone else she did a great test for someone who obviously only learnt rising trot last week (also hadn't but was very novicey) both in reply to snotty comments. If I couldn't find a personal remark to make I'd tell them to go forth & multiply or words to that effect.

I hope you are not seriously concerned by what folk who can only ride a "dumb blood"think about real working horses:eek:

I wouldn't have swapped Kippen (my Highland Pony) for either of their Warmbloods. The only nice thing I can say about these women is that we were in Lysterfield Lake Park http://tinyurl.com/72mduss on a road shared with walkers and people on mountain bikes. So they did ride their horses out and about and didn't just ride in a dressage arena.

Some people are plain rude, some don't understand what riding is about. my 14hh cob was regularly looked down upon as we unloaded and warmed ip at BD events. Funny when they realise your cob is the one that just beat their 30k neddy how people start looking at you differently.
You enjoy your pony and long may adults enjoy ponies!

Never! Even though I ride a 12.3hh NF :) mind you I'm only 5ft 3.

People round here know me too well, If they ever said anything I'd jump off and give em a slap :D AND I can hop back on easy!

I used to have the odd comment when riding my 14hh pony at the time I had got too long for her but I only weighted 8.5 stone unfortunately I had a baby and since have not been able to get back to less than 10 stone which was too heavy for her so graduated onto my 15.1 giant!! I don't like big horses, they frighten me very happy with what I have!

I'm 18 and ride a 13.3 of Welsh/Connemara/Warmblood descent (very flashy stallion jumped into his mum's field and he was the result). I'm 5'4 and just under 9st, so don't really look big on him at all, but I do sometimes get quizzed as to why I ride him by people of a similar age, who have moved onto horses to compete. My answer is I only compete unaffiliated, so no reason why I need to upgrade size wise - and this pony happily takes me round open XC courses, and in fact I am always the one that has to give their horses a lead over/past anything scary! Nothing phases him, he does everything from dressage to WHP classes and he excels in all of them. He's my pocket rocket and I love him! However, the reason I have him on loan is because he was bought for a small 11yo boy - he was considerably overhorsed as Blue is an absolute tank, and often forgets where his brakes are, so not really an ideal child's pony IMO.

I ride a 14hh native. I've never had negative comments, in fact she takes up my leg so well and I'm only 5'2" that sometimes I think I look small on her!

She's all horse to ride anyway, so the smaller size is an advantage in lots of ways. :)
