Sorry, but one more question, was going to say one final question but I very much doubt it will be.....

How do you know when the last pup has come out?

well technically...u dont

normally they whelp 1-2 hours between pups , but can whelp even faster between pups, if the process goes smoothly...my rescue mammy did....each time they begin to strain and lick at the vulva to stimulate each puppy, u will also beable to see her back body move as she contracts....so if she has been consistent.....and she has say 5 and shows no signs of pushing, licking and straining, contracting or panting like she would with the rest for atleast 2-3 hours...then it could be safe to assume she has finished.

If she has problems....gets distressed or gets a pup stuck...obviousley...call the vet......asap for advice....u will also need to keep an eye on her, for the next few days after....just incase she has retained any pups/placentas....keep an eye out for her becoming unwell, lethargy, vomiting, shivering, hemoraging blood/black discharge..excess foul smelling discharge, as opposed to clear/green red/brown non smelling.

Its normal for some bitches to spot blood when passing urine or walking around for a few days after...my mammy did.

Im sure others will add to this

God BB was absolutely right! You are terrific! Thank you so much for all this info. I really hope to be with her when she whelps. She is right at the bottom of the stairs to my bedroom so should easily hear her if she makes any noises. I'm used to being on foal-watch so pup-watch should be just as interesting but maybe not so tiring by the sounds of it, thankfully.

LOL!! Not yet.

They are due sometime around the 3rd December so thinking they will probably surface next week some time....but they are VERY giggly inside her!

You don't Tia. I get my pups & mum to the vets soon after birth (all of 5 minutes up the road) He gives mum a shot to ensure womb is clear, he also checks all pups for correct heartbeat, correct palate etc. Stuff which would make me PTS pup sooner rather than later.

Don't be too sure on that

LOL. We've had bitches start whelping around 5pm and haven't finished until 5am next morning! And both our last litters we thought the bitches had finished whelping after they started in the evening and mum went to bed at 1:30am thinking they'd finished, to come downstairs next day (or rather later on

) to find one more pup in EACH litter!

You usually get a rough idea when they've finished, the bitch will settle down and contractions will stop. It's a good idea to take the bitch to the vets if you think she's retained any placentas.

Yeah but that is only one night - I can easily handle that. Foal watch goes on for weeks and weeks, waking every hour through the night to check - now THAT is tiring LOL!!

The puppies are moving around loads now - Lily doesn't have a clue what is going on but she keeps looking at her tummy with a confused face. She is also licking her teats a lot and suddenly she will jump up and lick her bottom and then settle back down again.

She has settled into living in the house well though and is lapping up the extra attention she is getting.

LOL!! Well you're a lucky Lucy
grin.gif
. I was on it for about a month.....every single night, every single hour....and I was lucky as I had the mare in a shelter right outside my bedroom window so I didn't even have to get out of bed to check her at these ungodly hours.

I take my new moms to the vet the next day for a cleaning shot and to have the pups checked also. I've also had the experience of a bitch settling down like everything is done only to come back and find an extra pup. Whelping time depends on the number of pups in a litter and the size of the pups. Since there are 2 horns on the bitch's uterus sometimes the pups in one horn are born in fairly rapid succession then there may be an hour or so break until the second horn begins to empty. If the bitch has been straining and there are no pups within an hour, its time to call the vet.

Thank you - your advice (along with others) has been very helpful and much appreciated. I have it all filtered so I will be on automatic pilot when the time comes.

The little blighters are getting busier by the day!! So won't be long.

Ooh thanks for that!! I am sucking this info up - keep it coming if you think of anything else which might be relevant.
