How much are you all paying for?:-

Normal small bales
Large round bales
Heston bales

Do you buy from?:-

Your livery yard
Local farmer
It's home grown

What is your honest opinion on the hay you are using?

Yes its very good quality, you can't fault it.
Well its average, could be better but could be worse
Not the best crop we've had, not much nutritional value, bit dusty, but they all seem to eat it and thrive on it
Crap, looks and smells poor, its very dusty, in fact I'm coughing just thinking about it.

Finally, are you feeding it because?:-

It's the only hay I can get hold off.
It's the best you can afford.
It's mid range, means I can comfortably afford everything else.
Its just ok so I've not really thought about getting or looking for any other hay.

Don't know how much I paid 'cos hubby bought it from the farmer. I hope I like it because I have a barn full of the stuff!! It looks lovely, no dust and smells great. Horses seem to like it anyway.

A small bale of hay from my Yard Owner costs £3. It is fantastic quality, however I have a weirdly fussy horse who for no apparent reason refuses to eat certain hay.
So now he is being fed Haylage (which so far he is eating, but that could all change tomorrow!) which is from a local farmer, fab quality and costs £25 for a big bale.

So I feed it because - it's the only thing the ruddy animal will eat at the moment!

£3/bale
Large square [cuboid if you're being fussy!]- bales £22 each.
What are Heston bales?

Do you buy from?:-

Local farmer (also family friend)

(Last years you couldn't fault, it was spot on, not so rich the horses scoffed it but nice and clean, year before that was superb you could haev eaten it yourself but was just too rich!)

Um, none of the above, it's the best around, we get bulk discount and have it delivered as we need it so doesn't mean we need huge amount of storage space, the horses like it and it's cheap.

Sorry, possibly not too helpful!

I've bought small bales for this winter, they were £2 each and this years hay. Was from a local farmer who advertised through preloved. I think it's really good hay, smells nice and sweet and my boy seems to love it. For the first time I've had to get hay in, I'm quite impressed. Looks like it will go a long way too.

Bought it because it was cheap tbh and wanted to get it sorted, but actually very good quality and they delivered, so really can't complain

Its fairly average, but nobody to complain to except myself cos we made it off our fields

. Its actually fine, but was made a bit late due to incessant rain in July. Free is attractive though so they had better like it!

I have just bought a load for £2.75 (small square bales) as someone on the yard gets from a local farmer and I have 'borrowed' some off her recently. They get haylage at night but I like some hay as a back up for when they need it in paddock or to vary their night nets. It is very nice hay. (not that I know a lot about hay but it looks nice, smells nice and its not dusty and farmer is very popular lol)

I'm paying £3.50 for a normal "small" bale - that's the "delivered" price.
It comes from a local farmer who is delivering some more tomorrow. It's the nicest hay I've ever had in 15 years of horse ownership. They eat every blade and there is absolutely no dock/grotty weeds at all. It was cut in June when the weather was beautiful.

What is a Heston bale?

Heston bales are the large cuboid bales, so named coz they are made with a Heston baler.

We charge £3 a small bale for our hay, including delivery coz thats the going rate round here, less for the stuff thats not so good. However, our horses have eaten all they've been given so far and have not coughed, so it can't be too bad!

Some of it is good, some not so, it was a disapointing year for haymaking.

If hay is in short supply, the price will go up and when hay is plentiful, the price will drop, regardless of quality.

The yard did have in some other hay but none of the horses would eat it so they got the expensive hay instead. It is nice hay though.

£20 for large bale
Bought from local farmer
Not fantastic quality but could be worse
Only feeding it because one of ours had lamintis this year and don't want to feed haylage full time.

Everyone is way cheaper than at my yard as well - £4.70 in Kent.

our own

its lovely far too nice really! june cut and we just got in in during the very best of the weather.

was really worried about last years as it was end of aug and went in barn damp but it was mostly ok in the end and didnt get a cough from either of them.

We paid just over £1 a bale for someone to make it and sold enough to a friend for £2.50 which covered costs as we dont need and dont have space for all of it.

Every year I pay a farmer up front for my hay supply for the winter - about 230 bales and he then delivers in 40 at a time and stores the rest in his barn.

The hay is £2.50 and has been for a couple of years. Lovely stuff, not dusty and not soft rich hay but more suitable for my two as I prefer lots of stalky less rich hay so they can eat ad lib.

In the past 4 years I think I have had one bale I threw away which had got wet.

My two really like this hay, as do all those on the yard who now get it from the same guy as it is so nice and reasonable in price.

I buy from Dave as it is good quality for the price and more than sufficient for my two, he will let me buy up front so no worrying that I might run out and not be able to buy more and he is a lovely chap with a nice big smile and joke when he delivers at 8 in the morning so I can get to work afterwards - fantastic customer service.

Well I 'm really pee'd off. I live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by grassland but I'm currently transporting hay from over 100 miles away.
I'm not that pleased with what I've got. I am seriously considering buying Canadian hay to get a more consistent product.

Farmers are always moaning that they can't make a living (my a*se). I can't believe that they haven't worked out just how much good quality small bale hay and straw sells for.

I pay £25 for round bales from my YO. I'd say its average quality - no mould or dodgy looking plants or anything nasty but it is a little dusty, especially towards the middle of the bale. My mare has lived on nothing but this hay (grazing is v.poor) since mid August and held her weight beautifully so it must be fairly good stuff.

I buy from my YO as its convenient and a fair price. I can't buy in bulk as I don't have the storage so this is the easiest way for me.

How much are you all paying for?:-

Normal small bales- £3.30 per bale, delivered to my hay pile as needed

What is your honest opinion on the hay you are using?
Most of it is good quality I would say.

It's the only hay I can get hold of... we have to buy from the yard. But it's ok

I pay £30 for a large round bale delivered from a local farmer i haave bought from him for years now and the quality is great, my 4 love it and its not too rich. I can also get small bales at £3 per bale delivered. Lancashire.
