is anyone else the only horsey person in their family?

im the only one in mine. it was my parents who started my lessons, got me my first pony, but they have no interest in horses, and they always go mental when i buy things that fox needs as they dont understand he actually NEEDS it. all my cousins are boys and have 0 interest, none of my aunts uncles, grandparents.. nothing!

my sister did about 10 lessons before losing interest.. i wish i had someone to share my hobby with!

Yep. Totally the same. My whole family are into golf and football!! Can't imagine anything worse. My mum had a token effort of riding lessons when I was about 10 but didn't really like it.

At least they bought you a pony. My parents refused as they could afford (on full livery apparently) it but didn't like horses. They just weren't interested. So I bought my own when I left uni. I'm currently horseless as had to sell to support my oh in starting his business and then we had our little girl.

Oh isn't horsey eith but he came to shows with me, held Boo for me etc and was incharge of car trailer and camera!! He enjoyed it actually but has no interest in riding.

There are quite a few of us out there. I think my mum will go mad when we get another horse... And a pony for Florrie!!

Nope :D my old man bought me my first pony (for my brother and me) to try and encourage one, if not both of us to ride. Brother never caught the bug, but I did. We have three horses at home but only I ride now due to dad having hip and knee problems. Brother hates horses, can't see the point of them other than making a mess and costing too much to feed, and mother likes them but is too scared to even hold them!

OH is OBSESSED with horses, has about 13 at the moment. Can't remember the last time he said something that wasn't horse-related. He's actually worse than me, but I don't really mind!

Ditto here! My family are all into mountain climbing, caving ect...

Mine all started when my nan used to take me fore riding lessons, then i used to 'work' to ride .. My family refused to give me anything for x-mas/birthday towards a horse and told me i had to do it myself.. which is what i did!! I loaned horses from 14-17years and then bought my own when I was nearly 18 and havent looked back since!! Its been b***dy hard work but atleast i can say my horse and everything she has is me and not anyone else :)

I think in some ways to great as you dont take your horse/pony for granted whereas others who have had it all funded/given to them may not. (not to cause a debate, just opinion )

Yes but was lucky that my parents were really supportive, sadly they couldn't be financially other than keeping my pony from when I was eleven until I went to uni. I am really grateful that they gave me the chance :).

My parents weren't horsey, but both came from backgrounds where horses were working animals. Apparently I had horsey relatives, but excepting one aunt & uncle who moved to England when my parents did, the rest lived in Ireland & I rarely saw them. So to all intents I was the only horsey one, but I do remember being told as a child that it was in my blood, as so many of the Irish side were horsey. Daughter is pony mad too. Bf & his family weren't horsey ever, unless you include some great uncles who worked in towns & cities with horses used for deliveries. But they're all animal lovers & a couple of nieces have taken it up, for which I get the blame!

My mum used to ride when she was younger, but not to the extent where she would have bought/loaned her own horse. She put me on the waiting list for the local riding school when I was a baby (couldn't start until you were eight anyway) because her friend did it for her baby... when the letter came to say we had places the other girl didn't want to go, I went rather happily and the rest is history! I've had my own horse since I was 19 and shared one before that; I didn't want to get one until I could drive myself to the yard and contribute financially. I'm 24 now and on my second horse, my parents do help me out financially but I am in the middle of a PhD and teaching as well, so don't have time to earn enough to pay for everything.

But this financial situation hopefully won't last forever hopefully; in the meantime they love my horse and they are gradually becoming horsey - dad will flick through H&H and look at the equestrian properties (in my dreams!) and mum is talking about me having my own yard in the future, I'm not too sure about that though! They come to the yard every weekend usually and Stanley (horse) absolutely adores his 'granddad', I get ignored when he is around!

I'm the only one too. My elder sisters had riding lessons but this was only because the factory where my dad worked had a deal with a local stable for employees children to have a discounted lesson. So my sisters had learnt but weren't overly keen, a bit take it or leave it, and then I started lessons only because they had had some and it wasn't fair if I didn't - and I am the one who caught the bug!

My parents couldn't afford a pony for me but by the time I was 18 I had saved enough and bought a pony, my parents bought me a saddle.

I'm the only person in my family too.

I started riding because I was jealous of a girl on my road that used to have riding lessons. I started going with her and her mum (probably ruining their mother daughter time) I was about 9 years old. Mum and Dad never even came to watch me ride until I started local SJ at 16 years old!

They always said it was a phase I would grow out of.. they genuinely believed that too until I spent my life savings on a beastly black shire x TB! Safe to say that didn't go down well!

I've asked my grandparents and they have no recollection of anyone in our family being horsey.

My mum is still petrified of horses and won't get out of the car at the yard brother is pretty much the same and despite coming with me to the yard every christmas day for years he hasn't even stroked my mare ONCE!

Dad has no interest in horses but a very can do attitude which makes him a brilliant grown at shows! haha! :D

I am the only one in my family. My sister rode for a while but got bored and I loved it! I used to help out at a riding school where I got extra free lessons and learnt loads. I got my first loan pony who was a lovely nf pony who i adored when I was 14 and then shared an Arab when I was 16. i had various other shares over the years and got my welsh section D in June this year (i am now 27) and a Shetland on loan both who are fab and all paid for by myself and my husband. I was always left to get on with things by myself, my dad would drive me to the yard during the week but at the weekends I had to cycle, I also had a part time job to help pay for my livery. I really appreciated it tho and knew how lucky I was.

yes. My family hate Horses!!

My Mum is scared of them, My sister hates them and cant see a point in them and dad doesn't mind them but his not really in to it. My parents took me to a lesson, thinking I would be bored and lose interest, how wrong they were. To be fair to my parents they took me every week no matter what the weather, they must have been bored stiff!! (my mum would sit in the car and read and if dad took me, most of the time he would sit there and watch and try to make sense of what I was doing, if the weather was nice he would go and walk to a pub and have a beer :o)

They couldn't afford a Horse. But they payed out for equipment and supported me when I went to Writtle to do a course.

My little cousin has now been in lessons for a year, she rode Ruby on Sat :) I am taking her to olympia as a suprise.

Sort of! My mum used to ride back in the 1960's/70's, including an ex-racehorse who used to have panic attacks if he was in front!

The last time mum rode a horse was the first time I ever sat on one, apparently I wanted to go on the pony ride but cried on my own so mum came up with me, I must have been about 2 years old.

My sister rode until she was 10, she never wanted to get on my old horse (the first time she saw him he was bucking in every canter transition!) but she popped on my NF pony the other day in the school and actually had a little trot on her, for someone that hasn't ridden for 14 years she still has the basis of a lovely rider, she did say she might be tempted by some lessons on pony.

The only other horsey person in my family is my Grandpa's cousin who own's Dartmoor ponies in Devon :D she's in her 70s and still hacks out with the grandchildren :D

I asked my mum one why I got into riding lessons and she claims that it was the only thing I ever asked to do! :D

I am the only one.

As soon as I could speak, I was always on about ponies. Coming from a non-horsey family, I started riding lessons aged 6. Mum & dad refused to buy me a pony. I bought my first horse last August. My mum has only ever seen him once. Dad has seen him twice. My brother has never seen him and my sister had a little ride up the road (and nearly cried she was that scared!!:D)

It'd be nice to have a horsey family that wants to get involved but noone is interested. Everyone elses families are always at the yard, its usually just me & OH :)

I am the only one in my family really. Sent for lessons as a child as was very shy so mum thought it might help me?! Parents did the totally irresponsible thing and bought me a very cheap pony when none of us know about the care side but mum learnt v quickly and we made loads of horsey friends to help us get it right along the way.

Mum never rode my horses but was brilliant at helping out. When I went to uni I had to sell up and now many years later, married to a non horsey but tolerant hubby, and have a horse on loan. Nice to have an interest away from home but he must be bored stiff of the horse chat.;)

I am the only one, I am one of six children and none of them or my parents are remotely horsey. I wanted to ride from a very young age so my dad took me for lessons from the age of 6. They couldn't afford a horse for me and I promised myself I would by my own as soon as I started to work and I did. My OH and son aren't interested either, they will both help with the horses if I need help but only if I ask they wouldn't dream of feeding or mucking out unless I asked. I now have 4 and another one arriving on Friday (can't wait) so lots of work for me but I love it.

Yup, the only one. Parents were supportive though and my best mate at school was horse mad so that was enough. OH didn't like horses at all when we met; he now mucks in (out?!) all the time and I don't have to ask. He bought me my youngster. He even wanted to learn all about mustang rolls the other day! I'm now looking out for a big friendly dope on a rope that he can handle safely, and maybe even have a bit of a pootle about on. Funny how things change!
