I know this one has probably been done to death but..........
I compete unafil and have got my head round the fact of if i do two 60% plus tests then i can ride at area festival.
HOWEVER i have gone on to look at patchettes website and it has P17WQ (take it that means winter qual) O/R (open and restricted)
But then seems to show the prelim area festival as R only???
Does this mean that i cant compete in the classas im unafil?????
Sorry any help MUCH appricated!

But i dnt compete in restricted as im not affiliated!
So does that mean that actually i cant qual? but the BD website says u can compete and win but you have to be a member to compete at the finals? So how does that work?

it's not a con! it costs BD a lot of money to put on the festivals, provide the posh rossies, make the festivals a big thing etc - why should those of us who pay our membership fund non-members to take part in such an event? BD gives non-members the chance to see they can qualify without joining, but dont see why they should let them compete at the festivals without joining up. I'm still paying my membership every year even though my horse is now retired just to continue supporting them.

I thought you could ride in the Area Festivals without being a BD member, but you had to become a member by the time of the Winter Championships should you qualify

It works out that you (the rider) has to be a memeber to ride there- £60!!!!!!
I dont actually want to be a member for another year yet and im not paying £60 to ride at one show be a festival or not.
I think its a right con as if you read the shortened version of rules it doesnt make this clear.
I think its a con to advertise it in the way they do and its not till you read the fine print in the rule book that you realise this.
I wonder how many people have qualified then realise that they have to pay another £60?!

I have to agree with Star on this one, BD are good enough to let people see if they can qualify before having to pay out any money, it's your choice whether you go and then compete at the Area's it just means there is an extra cost involved.
If you don't want to pay then you can always do the Equestrian Monthly qualifiers and go to that unaff championship.

How can it be a con....surely there would be no point in anyone joining BD if all competitions were open to non-members?

You are already permitted to join as a rider and compete without registering the horse at prelim level...needing only to register the horse if you qualify for the AF or the Regionals.

There needs to be some reason why I pay my membership and registration fee!

I understand that people should pay but until you read the small print you are lead to believe that you can qualify and compete at AF without being a member, The rules arent easy to understand and even wheni called the BD office to have this explained they were wolly and refered me to their website.
Equestrian monthly no longer run their ones so that isnt an option. Im just very disappointed that BD arent up front and clear about this from the start and that it takes so long to find an honest answer.

How can this be complicated?

"You do not need to be a BD member, or have a registered horse to qualify for the area festival at preliminary level. However you will need to register your horse with BD to compete in the final"

The sheets you have qualify you, but you do need to register before you can go further

The FINAL- not area festival and it doesnt say anything about the rider having to be a member until you pour over the rule book

True I can see that bit is not clear.....best thing to do is to send off an e mail to BD and let them know their rules are not very clear.

I can see the logic in not permitting entry unless competitors join though..

I can see the logic, but would be nice if you could compete on a special ticket rather than having to fork out the £60. Maybe a £20 festival day ticket.
