Hi, work on my arena is due to start any day now & im looking for ideas on how to keep the surface maintained. The purpose built levellers/graders are so expensive so i wondered if anyone has any tips as to what to use that costs less!

Have you got a family member with an arc or mig welder?

Scafold poles make excellent levellers. Dad made one for the back of our tractor with a 3 point linkage. However you can always also drag a gate with a quad, car or ride on lawn mower.

20mm rubber levels easily with this method, do not try to add tines to dig into the surface as you don't want to dig it up.

My Arena leveller is just 2 old anti-weave grills that were lying around my yard when I moved in. I got a Blacksmith to weld them together for me and add a rope attachment and a small prong to very slightly lift the surface. Works a treat and cost me nothing!

or you could take a drive round a metal scrap yard and pick up an old metal/iron gate or something and then convert it.

i use a harrow to do mine , works great on a sand surface , just doesn't gey right into the corners which i have to do ny hand

We used to use a bit of the stuff that is in reinforced concrete, a sort of metal grill, we tied a metal pole on it to give it more weight. All very make do! At that time I had an old renault 5 and we used to tie the contraption onto the back of it with baler twine and my(then 12 yr old) daughter learnt to drive pulling it round the arena.

Great for clutch control! Also she is the best parket ever from trying to get the thing into the corners. (edit, sorry typo...best parker)

If we had banks round the edges we went round with a shovel first, pulling it onto the track. Great exercise!

We found some old angle iron in the garage I don't know what it costs to buy but OH collects all sorts of rubbish, for once I was glad I didn't make him get rid.

Anyway OH bolted it all together to make a kind of 5' long gate, added some chain from B and Q and hey presto, a little grader that works a treat. It can either be hitched to the back of the mower or it's light enough for me to drag round by hand, much to the amusement of the neighbour

Buy a decent leveller! We were just using a chain harrow, which we could see was doing no good, so bought a Logic Pro Grader. It is FAB! Only have to level arena twice a week even with 20 horses going on it everyday.
