Hi, I am lucky enough to be getting a sand and rubber arena built in next couple of weeks but not sure how to go about levelling it. I know i will need a grader/leveller but there are so many different types, also what to pull it with? I have a 4x4 but it will be too large to get round corners. I can't really afford to pay a lot of money for anything as arena is taking up every penny and more than i can afford. Any ideas what i should use or any other money saving ideas for it? Thanks.

The Arena Mate works really well, can be towed by a 4&4 and is reasonably priced as far as these things go.

You can always try a gate, an upside down small harrow (if you have one handy) or a pallet (probably with something to weigh it down), but none of these are going to be as effective in the long run. The Arena Mate is great at pulling the sand from the sides and is very easy to move about by hand (unlike harrows, gates and pallets!).

We use an upside down gate with a scaffolding pole towed by the fourtrack for ours. It works ok but the rubber at the sides has to be raked in manually so if you've got the money I wouldn't recommend it as it's hard graft!

I don't know about levellers as we don't have one. :(

we used to use a pallet weighted down but as you have rubber youl need something abit better. we have just a plain sand arena. I got brand new chain harrows off
ebay for £130, luckily they were only 20 miles away so i went and collected them. i pulled them with my 306 or the 4x4 if it was available. we cant get in the corners so i rake the sides in, it takes 5 mins if its kept on top of :-) and they can be used to do the fields to, they have 3 settings, aggressive if dragged one way, mild if dragged the other, ( what we use on arena as we get alot of build up) and leveler if flipped over. i have used this side once but as we only have sand it dragged so much sand up on the leveler side that i got stuck, the chain harrows are 30kg and i had about a tonne of sand dragging round with it! so i use the mild side to drag the sand around and it drops it in any lower areas.

I got a sand and fibre arena laid two years ago and was shocked at the price of levellers. I bought an Arena Mate which was far cheaper than any others on the market. Apparently not all levellers will work for fibre - not sure if its the same for rubber (I was told the fibre could become separated from the sand). The arena mate is okay and does the job maybe a more expensive one would be better but cost prohibitive. A 4x4 won't really do the job as you can't look out the back and see what is happening. Maybe also try to find a 2nd hand one.

We use a pallet weighed down for the sand arena (with quad) and another pallet weighed down for the rubber one (with 4x4) when we cant get hold of the proper leveller thingy. It works quite well but the sides of the rubber arena have to be raked in manually.
