Hi guys,

At my yard we have a 20 x 40m outdoor arena that was built before we moved there.

Unfortunately, whoever built it used builders sand which gets quite deep in some places and fine in others. In the deeper parts of the arena, the horse will sink about a hoof in depth but is a lot better once it's harrowed and rolled.

I cannot afford a totally new arena surface, but does anyone have any suggestions on an additive we can mix in to bond it?

It's quite sheltered and has brilliant drainage too.

Thank you :)

Our yard owner has shredded carpet on top of sand because it was quite deep :) it's not the prettiest but it does the job and the landing is comfier if you fall! haha

I have a silica sand school and added Alruba rubber shred eight years ago. The fine shred work into the sand and stabilise the surface and the course pieces stay on top and stop the sand being blown out and help prevent freezing. Just done a six tonne top up and looking and riding well.
