When your bitch isn't even 18 months old she is not old enough to be breeding from and you should be ashamed of yourself!

You will be lucky if the damn pregnancy goes to plan and nothing hapens to the bitch or the poor 3 pups inside her.

And breath!

Deep breaths, sadly there will always be idiots in the dog world. Just hope us sane ones out number them & educate newbies coming into it.

Poor little bitch. Would I be right in thinking she probably hasn't had any health checks either? At least she is only carrying a small litter so hopefully rearing them won't take too much out of her. I have given up trying to advise people like this, they just go ahead regardless. I know just how you feel, really makes me want to scream sometimes.

As you might know we had an accidental mating between our two (brother and sister) and despite going to the vet and having the morning after injection she still fell pregnant. She was only one and I felt terrible. However, she was a fantastic mother and the puppies were fantastic and we found wonderful homes for them. But obviously it wasn't planned and I wouldn't have done it through choice. (The boy now has no bits!!!!)

However, the point of this is to tell you about my neighbour who bought two little dogs - brother and sister - and despite me telling her about our problem and how bad it could have turned out - thought it was great idea and she has let her brother and sister puppies (only 8 months old) mate deliberately thinking she can make some money from the puppies!!!!

I might get shot down for this but....
I don't see the problem with mating an 18month old bitch so long as she is physically and mentally mature.... that is the important bit not the age on paper!!

Our Patterdale bitch had her first litter of 7 pups at 21 months so was mated at 19 months old, she was a fab mum and reared all 7 pups herself with no problems at all!

We plan to have a litter from her daughter at a similar age, which will be mating her on her 2nd season.

The law says they can't be mated younger than 12months which would mean whelping at 14months..I would say that was a bit young!

Surely in the wild a bitch would get mated on the first season, and probably hold in pup! As would wolves etc... so their bodies must be mature enough to cope??!!

I will add I wouldn't consider breeding on a dogs first season. Our bitch had her first at nearly 10 months then the 2nd season at 19months, which we felt was a good time to put her to our dog. We also took into consideration the time of year the pups were going to be ready to go as we wouldn't have wanted her to have them in winter!
Of course if a young bitch had her first at 6months then the next at 12months of course I would wait until her 3rd, before mating her.

I know of someone like that, their cat got knocked up accidently, and they rubbed their greedy little mits together and thought £50 a kitten, and just think if they were puppies that would be at least double!

They ended up with 2 of the 6 kittens left (all the others died), a £250 vets bill because the cat had a prolapsed uterus and also had to be neutered, which then resulted in them having to hand rear the kittens, and now the remaining kittens are being given to his parents just to get rid of them... so much for their £300 pure profit eh?

Although with their business accumen, they probably still think it didn't cost anything! I just pray they don't think this is a great money making scheme. Apparently they are now looking into buying bulls

A bloke I know who breeds pugs for showing (and he's not alone) always gives the bitch a dog at 18 months or her season around that age, he says having a dog earlier is better as they're more supple inside. I wait until two.

I guess alot of stud farms in Europe breed from 2y.o fillies and they would be alot more mentally and physically immature than an 18 month old dog.

Personally don't condone it but don't think anything will go wrong either.

P.s If she's been scanned for 3 she may be carrying more.

Skye was scanned for 3 and dropped 9!

I hope she isn't carrying anymore though!!

MM or Echo, what are KC rules as to minimum age?

I have just had a look at the KC website as I wasn't sure what they said about minimum age. Needless to say the only reference I could find is that they will not register a litter from a bitch younger than 12 months at the time of mating! In GSDs if you sign up to the Breed Council Charter you agree not to mate a bitch before 20 months, or their third season. I know it is considered acceptable to mate smaller breeds at a younger age, but not something I would do.

Poor dog..

We waited until our lab girl was 4 before she had puppies, had all the health checks, hips and elbows scored, eyes tested and same with the father, we got a photocopy of all the certificates. We wouldn't do it any other way..
I do know someone who has 2 huskies.. the bitch was only just a year (not even I don't think) when there was an accidental mating in their back garden and the owner let her carry the pups. We had an accidental mating before our boy was neutered and we had our bitch injected..
It maddens me when all people think about is the dog as a puppy making oven..
