Have they seen the size of pony they ride in basically everywhere else in the the world? Seems like only here we insist on riding great big horses. Why? So much further to fall...
It's a fashion thing. People rode the ponies of these islands for centuries. They rode them to get from A to B, over Welsh mountains, fells and dales, the Highlands, and the bogs of Connemara. Real, big grown up people rode them, they lived out, with no rugs, and no hard feed, and they grew up tough, and developed into the fine, workmanlike, specialised natives we know and love.
If we try hard enough, reduce them to only carrying toddlers, rug them to within an inch of their lives, and feed them on chemically enhanced cr*p and sugar, we should manage to destroy all that within a generation, I should think.
Tell them to go boil thier heads.
Oh, does anyone want to borrow my soap box?

My personal opinion is that in some cases there is probably an essence of snobbery (bigger horse, better bloodlines, nicer looking than their friends horses etc) about the horse of choice, however in most cases I think it is simply that people buy the best horse for the job.
In my case, my own horses range from 14.1hh to 15.2hh - the majority being around 15hh, which is typical for the breed I have. I need little horses to do the job I am asking of them - a big horse would be of no use to me.
Basically it all comes down to what the rider wants and it's up to them to choose the horse which will satisfy their wants/needs.
When I was a child I got told to jump straight from a 12.1hh pony to a 16hh horse. I wasn't impressed and went for 14.2hh!
Could still be found riding shetlands for a few more years as well!
What people forget is that height is no indication of weight, nor is it an indication of weight carrying ability. Small ponies can carry more than you would think!
I think though you have years left in your pony, who is absolutely gorgeous!
I agree with Christiamas, it's all snobbery.
