Argh Dilemma

My pony is in a riding school and is on loan to a girl who rides there .
They asked me today if she could take him to a show next weekend thats about half and hour away. The problem is the pony is a swine

. He has always been a nightmare to load but he started to get better and now he loads fine when I'm there and loading him but I don't trust him with other people .
The said that they have been intermitently practcing loading with him and he's been ok when bribed with food and not been fed hard feed the night before so he is a bit hungry .
The problem is (as I well know) he will load like a dream but on the way back won't go within 20 feet of a ramp

Go with them! At least then you can make sure they aren't doing anything to undo your good work with him. And there may be someone at the show who can help at loading time.

Do you have time before they go to load him with them, drive around the block, off load somewhere else (safe) and try to get him in again and see if you can work something out with them helping? Or if you are that convinced its doomed then you are close enough to lead him home and they won't take him to the show so you win without having to actually say no!

I would let them go and see how he behaves! you often find that horses react differently with other people when Mum isn't there, you never know, he might walk straight up for them. I had a mare that wouldn't load for hours with me but when I sold her telling them she was dodgy to load they never had a problem with her!

They are hiring a trailer for the evening so no chance of trying before hand , and they have been using a lorry to practice with

Will see if they can borrow a trailer for the afternoon to see if he will load .
 
I would say..yea let them go, BUT warn them what he may be like on the way bakc and if they want to take that chance that he may not load then its up to them it they want to go to the show..!
 
Can they borrow the practice lorry to take to the show then? Some people won't be told, I know that, so if you really don't want to say no, just make it patently clear beforehand that they may well get into real difficulties and at least then you can't be accused of landing them in it!

Poor you, I really feel for you, it must feel like a no win situation. Always tough when kids are involved too.
 
Explain everything - then let them decide. At least they will go prepared and your conscience is clear. He might ..........just be fine and they might............... just have such a fantastic day out that they will forgive him if it takes 3 hours to load. ;-)
 
The lorry is mine , and if we were going then he would come on the lorry with us , but as i'm horseless ATM were not going and its my sisters 18th

. Think I will sit down and explain all the many problems , hopefully they will understand and weigh it all up , but at the end of the day I think they will want go as it will be S's first show , unless I just say no .

Off topic but how come you are horseless? Aren't you the lady with the lovely young coloured that started with riding issues? Sorry if I've got the wrong person but if it is you its a shame if you didn't manage to sort it out.
 
I am the 'lady with the lovely young coloured' . Sol isn't being ridden at the moment , hoping to be back on her in the next few days . I chose to give her some time off (after the 'inccident') to hopefully 'sort her head out' as I think when she came home from breaking she was a bit overwhelmed .
My loan horse has just gone back to the owners so I am horseless (I can't ride or compete atm until I find a new one which is proving more difficult than I thought)
But Solitaire is well and seems to be very happy

and I can't wait to get back on as she seems to have matured no end in the last 6 weeks .

BTW regarding your dilemma, I'd advise them to go somewhere close to home for the first couple of trips out, that way if they find you're right and he won't load going home they can hack instead.
