Today was first day of raw for Dylan and Teal. My butchers do a chicken offal mix which is basically wing tips, necks and carcusses and offal, he said it works out 70% bone. So they had thatvthos morning and a turkey thigh each. I "chickened" out given Dylan the bone so Teal got both. Glad I did as went straight down. Not sure how to tackle this one? Hopefully getting a deer carcuss soon so might wait till then to get him chewing properly. Dylan needs more than that but for 48 hours I want to see how he copes.

Put them straight on raw as they ate a duck between them on Thursday and they pick up pheasant on our road and eat it so they obviously cope well.

Typical Labrador:rolleyes:

I wouldn't worry to much as they are designed to eat that way - you will hear them bringing bits back up but don't worry as it will be the bits that need either eating again to be digested properly or it will be the bits that can't be digested at all.

Max appears to swallow chicken wings, herrings, mackerel etc whole as well:rolleyes::)

Good for you, nothing as good or as natural as raw food and bones!

I have been feeding my lot for about 5 years now and no regrets what so ever, wish I had done it years ago, such a difference in the dogs!
NO fleas either , the dogs that is, not me, raw food seems to keep them at bay!
I use a couple of companies for my raw, main one is landywoods.co.uk
Oz :)

i would be interested to see if they eat the deer

i feed mine raw, i have five dogs, not one of them would eat the deer ,they were not impressed

As long as you supervise, you can give him the bone. I was advised to hold the chicken wing/leg etc to encourage the puppies to chew and now they cope fine with whole turkey rib cage alone. The sticky above is very handy.

Mine love deer but be careful as deer bones especially the big red deer are very hard so I would stick to the rib bones which tend to be a bit easier. It's the same as cattle really deer are usually much older when they are killed than lamb pork or chicken so the bone is denser. If you are worried get an axe and break a few of the bones up a bit, I would always do this with older dogs as their teeth can wear and I've found older dogs starting out on raw do have weaker teeth than those fed from an early age.

Some dogs will eat very quickly my sister's 13 yr old husky can still down a chicken carcase virtually in one, though it does get a bashing with an axe first these days.

But don't worry it is natural for them to bolt their food in chunks, they don't secrete enzymes in the mouth so chewing for them is not necessary.

Well done for trying this diet, you wont regret it, mine have never been so healthy, my oldest is now very old and infirm ,but is 18yrs old, cant put it all down to the BARF diet, but it has helped considering she was given a year to live at 4 years old.

Good luck xx

Any muscle meat especially fatty muscle meat will put on weight, so if you feed chicken wings or carcasses they are about what you should feed for maintenance, so for weight gain use chicken legs or drumsticks or Turkey legs. breast of lamb is good as well or stewing steak if it's on offer, lambs hearts are good too.
