Hi, just found out, after a lengthy lameness work up, that my 7 year old Shire x AES mare has OCD in both hind fetlocks. My vet has refered to it as low grade joint carteledge OCD. She is coming home tomorrow and then returning to the vets in a week for key hole surgery to smooth the rough carteledge.
I have previously had another horse with OCD in stifles. that one had the surgery but then developed navicular and ended up being put down.
That was a long time ago and things are a lot better now hopefully?
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with their horse?
Any advice or hope welcome
Ta very much!

OCD is part of a group of conditions which are known as 'developmental orthopaedic disease' ie growth related disorders however I understand it can sometimes occur as a restult of injury or strain. I think with you were particularly unlucky with your last horse and both OCD and Navicular syndrome being two quite common conditions meant that it didn't really stand a chance. This one sounds pretty mild so chances are good but the best advice I can offer you is to take each day as it comes and enjoy the good days. with horses there are no guarantees! Good luck xx

Hi

Sorry to hear about your horse. My four year old gelding was diagnosed in March with OCD in his stifle and hock. He had keyhole surgery and 8 weeks box rest (at a cost of £5000) . I am afraid to say he is still lame 6 months later even though the vets gave him a good prognosis at the time. Hes going to be retired to grass now.

Good luck and sorry mine isn't a postive story to tell you.
