A few weeks ago, we started some new hay - even now am still mixing old and new! However almost straight away Lyla started coughing
So started soaking her hay overnight, rinsing it letting it drain during the day and giving it to her that evening. Much improvement.
Last night before last, the soaking hay froze completely - think hay lolly - and hadn't defrosted even by last night
So last night she had a haybar full of dry hay.
This morn, she sounded like like a 40 a day smoker!

Coughed almost continuously out to the field
She ate her breakfast in field and when I left she was grazing ...
Also last night she seemed a little "off" - had left most of hay - UNUSUAL (food is her life!!!) - from when she came in (YO bring's her in early when the others come in) but someone said this maybe cause she's bored of hay having had it in the field too?? (hay overkill?) And she seemed a little uncomfortable, looking like she wanted too poop (there were 2 poop already
) and then she did poop whilst I was watching, after which she seemed happier and started munching her hay. And she troughed her tea no problems!
Thankfully its warmed up, so we'll defo be back to soaked hay tonight
But I'm worried about her!!! This morning's coughing was awful - wondered if she'd got something stuck in her throat?? Or could one night of dry hay cause such extreme coughing ??
She's upto date with injections, is only 7 and is stabled on comfy bed (only cos she ate all the straw
)
Could these episodes be linked ?? Am I being overly neurotic ?? Maybe she just didn't want me watching her poop ??
Am going to see how she is tonight and tomo morning, if coughing no better after soaked hay, will get the vet.
Any reassurance, thoughts etc appreciated - tea and buns if you're still reading!
Thanks, DD & Lyla
