Ok, so before I got monkey, (My 3yr 3month old) she was being fed stud mix I sought advice as soon as I bought her and changed her onto alfa and Topspec leisure time feed balancer. Coming into summer, my other horses (fatties!) have changed from a balancer to just a general all round powder supplement. I was going to do this with monkey, but someone on here, suggested perhaps putting monkey on suregrow (due to her bad-ish start/weaned too early/suspected gastric ulcer before I got her).

So I contacted Dodson and Horrell about Monkey and they suggested feeding her the D&H Ultimate balancer. So my question is, whats the difference between this and Topspec leisure time feed balancer (that she was on?)

If there isn't much difference, should I still kep her on the TS or change to powder supplement for summer?

Thank you :)

Ok so I have looked up the nutritional advice (thank you SO much for that link!) But not really sure what I am looking for?

DH advisor said: "Ultimate Balancer has several benefits including: Omega 3 & 6 oils – for skin and coat condition, Biotin – for healthy hooves, MSM – for its anti-inflammatory properties, Mobility herbs – to help maintain flexible joints and Prebiotics & Yea-Sacc – to help maximise digestive efficiency. Ultimate Balancer also contains good levels of quality protein which provides the building blocks for muscle."

But with regards to the TS or DH, whats the difference? Whats the best one for monkey? I'm not sure exactly what she needs. I know she needs to make up for her bad start. I was just going to put her on a powder supplement but as shes on restricted grazing I am not sure now.

ETA:Just spent ages sorting out the spacing below and pressed save and it hasn't worked - DOH! The first number is DH the second number is TS :)

I'd stick with the TS Balancer. Feed plent of good quality forage, no starch.

I've not heard protein causes ulcers! I think alpha a is also a good buffer for the stomach along with unmollased beet.

My pony is thought to have had ulcers and I highly recommend Pink Powder, just to throw another spanner in the works!

I feed this along side no cereal, plenty of fibre and sugarbeet if needed.

If you prefer to go down the balancer route and like the fact D&H contains all the above, then Top spec also do a balancer with Glucosamine for joints called Top Spec Senior. Very similar spec to the Comprehensive but with Glucosamine.

Top Spec also contains pre/probiotics, biotin etc. If you give them a call, they are very helpful and will send you nutritional analysis should you require.

All balancers are much of a like and what will work for some wont work for others. Ive used Top Spec but didnt see any amazing results compared with Baileys Lo Cal and Pink Powder.

Its so hard to know what to do! I was going to put her on the powder supplement, a general al round one, to save monkey in summer but now I am not sure what to do. Does she need to be on a balancer, or would a powder one be ok?

I have been in contact with the nutritional people, but I dont think they would ever say to feed a powder one and not a balancer as I do think in a way they are sales people and out to make money, which is why its so difficult

Pink Powder is a balancer it has pro and pre biotics. I have been feeding it for a couple of years to my horse and find it not only cheaper but better than a lot of the expensive balancers.
