Arghhh..hot foot...swollen leg...no sign of absess!

Gord had a hot foot on & off a couple of weeks ago but with no lameness or swelling. Had new front shoes, farrier said he had a bruise. He pulled off new front shoe 24 hrs later. Farrier replaced another 24hrs later! He was then lame. I presumed bruise now sore & sore froom having feet messed with generally. This was a week ago & he is progressivly got worse. Foot constantly hot & very lame. Last night leg swelled & this morning was huge.
Farrier came out this morning & checked over, no sign of absess& he said swelling wasn't too bad! I was at work so unfortunatley couldn't be there. Could he still be sore from bruise & shoeing?? Just seems to be taking time & I thought would have got progressivly better not worse? Spoke to vet, she says sounds like absess, but farrier sure there is no sign. Am thinking maybe deep seated absess & not come out yet? If still very swollen tonight will get vet tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone might have any clues?

Hum... sounds to me like you need to give it a couple more days, if its an abcess or a bruise it will come out..

Could also be an idea to poltice as this will draw both bruising and abcess..

At firs, when u said lost a shoe i thought nail bind, but if your farrier has been out to search for an abcess he will have taken the shoe of so this is unlikly.

Gravil in the white line is a possibility.

Which leg is it in? is he activly lame or weight baring lame? how badly lame is he? where onthe leg is the swellin.

It's his near fore. He's weight bearing & its slightly obvious in walk & hopping in trot. Very obvious if you turn him in circle.
I thought that maybe an absess would be obvious bynow & farrier says the bruise which was there seems to have healed.
Leg swollen from pastern to below knee. Heat up to there too.
Farrier thinks if absess or bruise would have shown by now as it has been a week & if was down to soreness from losing shoe should have settled by now too.
Which would lead me to think it was further up the leg but as the swelling is not particular to one area? Hmmm...my horse is always a mystery. The thing is it was so swollen this morning & I just daren't risk leaving it too long incase something has been missed.

I'd be getting a vet out. Our pony had just such a thing and bute plus a week's box rest with stable bandages seems to have done the trick - so far..........

Do get expert advice as you don't want it to be a ligament.
 
Well I got home last night & the swelling had gone down loads! Less heat too. So a friend trotted him & he was much lesslame. Still lame, but not hopping now. So kept him in & spoke to vet. As there was an improvement, she advise to rest him over the weekend & see what happens. This morning was still slightly swollen & trotted up pretty similar to last night if not a little better. He has gone out with turnout boots on to see how he reacts to excercise.
I chose not to keep him in as he tends to throw himself around an awful lot & will probably damage himself more. Thankfully he is very sane out in field & just potters about.
Fingers crossed will be ok when he comes in.
It is still a mystery at this stage.
Obviously if it worsens again, vet will be straight out.

My oppinion, i'd say kick to the leg or he's pulled summit. The fact that he is weight baring rules out an abcess in my mind. And it can also rule out bruising, however yous ay it rears its ugly head in trot and that to me says soft tissue, and even more so when you say it is prominant on a circle...

I would have him on a low dose corse of bute, i would have him turned out so he can move around and i would keep an eye on the swelling. If you are concerned get the vet..

I had a similar thing with one of my horses back in January. The vet (fairly inexperienced) came out and prodded around with the hoof prodding thing and couldn't get any reaction. She then started talking about chipped bones in the fetlock joint and I'm started to get worried although how this horse who is very laid back would do something like that in the field is a mystery. I persuaded her to put the horse on bute and leave it for a few days. Guess what? An abscess burst out through the coronary band about a week later. I was so relieved. Hope your horse's problem is something similar and heals up quickly.

Seems to be improving & turnout seems to have reduced swelling. Still lame however not hoppin gso much. Hmmm

Haven't ruled out the thought that there could be a deep seated absess in their somewhere lurking!!
