B****y stallion... He manged to escape into a field with mares last week by climbing a bank and jumping two electric fences and has been rampant ever since. (he's a pussy cat all winter)
Just heard thundering hooves to see him gallop past the house at full pelt, swerve onto the grass and lose his back shoe by treading on it with his other foot.
CCj was in hot pursuit, apparently he was being a prat so she jerked the leadrope, it was a quick release so it released itself.....
She is already fretting because his weight is dropping but this happens every spring, he can't help his nature.
The farrier was here yesterday too, so it looks like we may have to do a 40 mile drive to Duchy where their farriers usually are on Wednesdays.
From now on he will be led in a lunge or bridle, but wth Belmont looming ever nearer he needs four shoes....

Oh HH I'm sorry but that's made me smile, sorry but he does sound very full of the joys of spring.

Yes note to selves now quick release lead ropes and stallion are not perhaps the best mix.

Hope you manage to get the shoe back on without too much effort and he doesn't manage to wreck his hoof in the mean time.

When I worked on a stud and with comp stallions we always led with a chiffney or bridle, even if they were dead donkeys, just couldn't risk any accidents or mishaps!

Problem soved the farrier (bless her) came straight away even though she lives 20 miles away.
A bigger problem is the state he is in, we have moved more horses out of his sight as he must have spent all morning flying up and down getting sweatier under his rug and stressed and losing weight rapidly. Very galling as he has looked so good all winter..
We will change his routine keeping him in longer and bringing him in earlier at night, but I reckon the weight won't go back on for a month at least, none of us were here this morning or we would have brought him inside..
CCJ was very upset about it but there is nothing we can do, at least five hours of non stop cantering must mean he is fit enough fr the XC!!!
Funny though how stallions are absolutely fine one minute and the next spring arrives and wowee off they go .
The quick release ropes won't be used again...

I've got a very riggy welsh sec a, who was in exactly the same sort of mood today!!! He ever hopped aboard another little welshie of mine and then threw a strop with me when I took her away and left him all alone in the paddock!

Isn't spring lovely!!! nothing like the change of season to make the horses change as well!

I have four stallions and my girls are taught never,never , never take the boys for granted; they are all exellent but they are boys!! So for me they are'nt the problem it the mares 'tarting' that i have a problem with!! Saying that my dutch stallion was a real stress monkey before i sent him away to have semen collected. Now he understands that the sex thing does'nt happen at home and he now seems quite happy to have his two lives!! He just goes away for sex breaks!!!

I'm sure there are a few out there that would enjoy the same!!!!

The other odd thing is that even at shows where i've had to deal with mares and foals they have never been an issue its some geldings that have lead him to loose the plot?????

It is bloomin' difficult when you have a stressy one [stallion] to get them ready for the competition so i feel for you there. Hope things get better!!

I had exactly the same thing happen to me years ago when leading a 2yr old TB colt.
One minute colt here.............next, gone and left with the rope in hand! Ooops!

It is difficult at this time of year when they cover at home, isn't it?

Thankfully it sounds as though no harm is done but to your nerves. Hope he'll settle soon. Has he any mares due to him soon? It may alleviate his frustration, or could turn him into a raging sex machine!

Fingers' crossed he behaves perfectly at shows, in fact someone came up to my daughter last week and said "Oh he has got balls then, I wondered as he was so well behaved!"
He is a funny chap in his head, he doesn't like new fields, he likes his own particular stable, and gets very uptight if things change.
The fact he escaped last week (and may have covered a livery's four year old

has really got him wound up, today we are taking him to Southcott XC for a practice before the weekend in the hope he calms down after some harder work.
We thought we had sorted the weight issue by keeping him in overnight, but the escape seems to have brought all his urges to the fore so the sooner he has some mares the btter! The first one if booked in for late April so a while yet and ours are all late due to the climate here.
It's annoying to see weight literally fall off when he looked so good last week...(some pics of him on a cazcrazyjonty post saying I'm thinking)
Never mind, at least just having one stallion now is easier than two, normally they would be charging around their paddocks trying to prove to each other who was the most macho... in fact I wonder if he misses the other one, as he seems more wound up without his prescence?
We found with the stallion competing it was alway the mares who got wound up not them; my Oh used to ride near them if they were in the jump of with him..(naughty chap!) it worked houh, poor mares wouldn't concentrate after that!!!

Had better make sure you post all your propective comps - my mare can sniff a stallion a mile off - she was trying to make a bee line for WFP on Saturday - whinnying and battering her eyelashes! good luck for Belmont - its not very inspiring though - a bit like your chaps experience with the 4 year old - all over in a couple of minutes! Have you been? We went last year - journeyed miles and miles (lived in mid wales then) and wondered actually was it worth it.

My mare is a nightmare like this too....had a lady come down and see them as she is looking after them when on hols and my mare just walked through the electric fencing right in front of me and the lady...I had just mentioned how well behaved she was.
She also jumps fencing to be in with others - three electric fences once....!! she also used to wind up a stallion which was in the field next to her....calling and running up and down..in the end we would have to fetch her and put her in her box to calm the stallion down....
horses are great sometimes arent they!!!
