Hello,

I'm engaged with my partner who is in the army and I have my own horse, who I have now had for nearly 2 years.

We are due to be married later this year and was wondering if anyone on here may be married to someone in the forces and how they find it moving around every 2/3years with their horse?

I currently have my horse on DIY livery and love my yard.

Will be sorry to leave later this year when we are given a house through the army.

Any advice welcome :-)

I'm not one - but live very near an airbase and a few of the wives have horses so they come and go a bit in the local yards. In fact the airbase has a livery yard next door and a feed store at the base, so they are well catered for. I don't think horses mind moving that frequently - as for you, I guess you have to become adept at finding a new yard and moving on... but that applies to everything in life too... Do you know yet where you are going to?

Thanks Amateuristic. Will have a look at that page

He will start his new posting next month in Camberley, Surrey area and will based there for 2 years. I won't be moving until September this year. Will just have to adapt as you say. So hard when you do find a nice yard and I like my job too!! That's another thing to look for aswell lol

There are quite a few small yards near Camberley. I kept mine on DIY in Eversley and there was good off road hacking. I travelled from Aldershot twice a day so was quite a way from me. I left the forces in 2009 so t may have changed a bit now.

OH was in the RAF for 22 years and apart from a very short spell he spent the whole time in Lincolnshire so didnt have that problem but many forces bases have or used to have their own saddle clubs some with facilities and everything you will need and others with deals with local groups and livery yards so keep up to date with the current saddle club you will get loads of help
eta the horses are literally bomb proof now as they spent many years on gun ranges, runways and other noisy and spooky places

My partner said there was great hacking around that area but I do worry about hacking in the woods with the army training in them aswell!! When my partner was doing a course he said he saw a few riders out and about in the woods. Hopefully people will be able to advise on no go areas from the yard I will go to!! lol

Yeah there are a lot of riders out in the woods, but the army are very good with the general public. I went through training there and saw many riders and when I left the army I also rode there. Never had any issues :)

I just don't go with mine! He is based in NI at the moment, I love my job and don't want to move my horse out there so I live in England and we see each other at weekends. It works brilliantly (barring cost of flights) I get uninterrupted guilt free weekdays to spend with the horse or training doing boring chores and he can do whatever it is he does and then the weekends are always fun. That probably doesn't help you, does it?! (I'm not quite the same as not married, but only cos I don't do marriage!)

Ha KatPT, that sounds how we are currently.

He is based up north and im down south, so he works away in the week and home at weekends. Works really well for us too but he just had to get down on that knee!! lol

Love having my guilty free evenings with the horse in the week but im also always with the horse at the weekend. Just as well other half is in to keeping fit, so can be hours at the gym, mountain biking or running for a few hours, so I can get my horsey fix at the weekend :-)

I don't know personally but if you have a calm horse that's not stressy, I can't see why it wouldn't work.
Just research the yards before yoy move, try to keep in the same routine so.horse knows what's happening.

Good luck.

I live near Camberley/Aldershot so have met a few army wives at yards I've been on, there is also a livery yard on the RMA base at Sandhurst. I've taken my horses in there for lessons with the master of horses and it seems a nice friendly yard. We hack on the ranges all the time, there are areas that are out of bounds at times but they put red flags up so you know. There's plenty of land outside the red flag zone and I walk the dog and ride over them regularly with no problem. Good luck and if you post on the South East board then I'm sure you'll get lots of recommendations of yards.

Definitely makes it easier if they have their own obsessions as well. Mine is taking up photography so when I go out with the horse he now comes and takes pictures to entertain himself. He knows better than to propose! Good luck with your move though. I'm from a military family and my pony coped fine with moving.
