One of my horses has had (fairly mild) mud fever all summer. I've been treating it with hibiscrub and Sudocrem but it hasn't got rid of it. I read on here about Aromaheel - a few people said it was great stuff - and bought some. I've been putting it on now for several days and so far all that seems to be happening is that the scabs are getting harder. The ointment doesn't seem to stick well to the leg - even though it's pliable, it still 'cracks' when the horse moves, and it's always all gone by the time I go to reapply it (putting it on twice per day). The website says that the scabs should soften and fall off of their own accord, and that the stuff should form a permanent waterproof barrier. I'll give it a few more days before mailing the company, but any advice in the meantime? I'm a bit hacked off at the moment as the cream is not cheap!

I've used it before, but don't think it really works..... it smells lovely though

Keep up the hibiscrubing and get some Fuciderm gel off the vet, that usually clears it up. The sudocreme sort of seels in the bacteria, and isn't reccomended by (our) vets. ONce you've cleared it up, then the sudocreme is great as it acts as a barrier.

It worked for me.
The scabs themselves dry up, but it's easier to peel them off the skin.
Is the skin totally dry & are you spending about 5-10mins per leg massaging it in?

I am not sure it's mud fever (are you?) because lots of horses are getting scabby, itchy heels and there's no mud about! People are finding this really hard to get rid of, and trying all sorts of different treatments.
It could be mites from the field or straw, fly bites, infection (like mud fever, I guess) or anything. Two horses at our yard have it, and nothing seems to be working

fantastic stuff, before i had tried hibiscrub, flamazine off the vet none was working. Got a tub of aromaheel, you just have to slap a load on and leave it, ideal as mine are out 24/7. Even by the next day there was huge improvement. Completely gone, no picking of scabs needed, within 3/4 days.

I am 99% certain it's mud fever - he always gets it worse in the summer, usually in the dryer weather, than in the winter. The vet thinks its mud fever too.

I've slapped a load on but it just seems to wear off by the next application - I'm wondering about putting a bandage on top of it to keep it in place for a bit longer?

yeah my boys got some scabs which have appeared over the past couple of days. If been plastering flamazine on to try and soften the scabs. Can u only buy aromaheel on net? Both mine are prone to getting it over the winter no matter how much I try to prevent it! I'm hoping to peel the scabs off later today then keep plastering in flamazine until it hopefully goes! It's a nightmare!

When lukey got mud fever recently I had an antibiotic cream from the vet...I also used kamilosan cream. Kamilosan cream is basically for nappy rash/Irritated skin conditions. It contains chamomile which is said to have antiinflammatory properties. It cleared up fairly quickly and hasn't returned x
