I was wondering what are the arrangements for having a small rider (a child) on your pony in the showring?

Do you pay the child's parent or is there no charge because they have been able to ride your pony in the ring? Especially a pony of good quality.

What insurance do you need? I would also make sure that I have written consent from the parent, as well as a contract done.

I'd ask around locally to see if you can find anyone who is interested. I'd expect you could find someone who would be interested in doing it without payment, particularly if the child would be getting experience they otherwise wouldn't get and it's a nice quality pony.

I would want any rider to have their own insurance, though.

If you are after an experienced LR jockey for the ring then yes, payment is usually expected. Don't ask me how much as I can't remember and it's a while since I paid someone to ride. If you just get a local child to ride then usually they'll be happy to do it for the experience, however, this usually then means you have to buy the full lead rein outfit and they certainly aren't cheap. You'll probably pay £200 - £300 for a second hand one. (Assuming you're talking of County Level Showing).

I never paid kids to ride for me and their parents didn't pay me either. They always got to keep all of their rosettes and prize money. I paid all of the entry fees. This was mostly at local agricultural level in affiliated classes, sometimes at the Highland in the HOYS classes.

Thank you everyone for your answers. This helped a lot as I'm completely clueless with how these things work??‍♀️?

Has anyone got any suggestions for where I could find lead rein outfits, new or old?
