I realise that the whole subject of fireworks have been done to death but up until today i never really saw them as a problem for any of my horses but how wrong was I?

we keep out horses about 6 miles out from any towns so they are in the middle of no where with just 1 access road which leads on to an off road track which leads to a bridle path. the bridle path runs along the back of all the horses fields but there is about 5ft gap between the fence and the path and then there is a hawthorn bush and lots of trees and then we have electric fencing running 3 ft in from the fencing so they are far away from the path.

all the horses are mooching at the bottom of the field except Rio who had been brought in just 5 mins before.. its pitch black coming up to 6 o'clock and me and my step-sister are going to get Taz and Missy in when we see something light at the far right corner of their field... the horses were now just eating in the middle of the field as they had got bored of waiting when one of those massive rocket fireworks went off pointed directly at the horses.

it hit the floor about 5 ft away from Taz and exploded. at this point my heart has completely dropped i cant see anything other than the firework on the floor and its screeching so loud. Then i hear the horses galloping around, snapping posts and then the horses are charging around. the firework had now gone off and i cant see a thing just hear a lot of screeching horses.

Mum has turned her car around and is now shining her head lights down into the field so we can see whats happened. they had broken the middle fencing and were charging around with another horse who is quite agressive towards other horses so we are now trying to catch them to get them in and check them over.

Manage to get hold of Taz who is shaking and trying to take off again - i can tell you now that trying to calm a 17.2hh tank of a horse when all he thinks is everything is going to get them is not easy. My step sister has caught Missy who is calmer than Taz and we start bringing them in. Taz is very het up and is being bolshy as he does and then i realise why - his neighbour is loose and is cantering up the track - great. Manage to get hold of her and get her in her stable and take all their rugs off and check them over no damage done thankfully although taz has a few singed hairs :(

rang the police and they just said there is nothing they can do and all they can suggest is that we stable our horses full time during the fireworks season...WHAT?! im not keeping my horses in full time until january they are taking the p*ss! and why arent they out patroling to see if they can catch them?!

im so glad Rio was already in as having a loose stallion really wouldnt have made the situation any better at all and also really thankful that all the horses came out unharmed! but god knows how they will react to fireworks now :( i really wish they didnt sell fireworks privately its ridiculous how much damage could have been caused by their stupidity!

rant over! hope no one else every have to experience this!

How awful! Poor you. You must be very angry that the police won't help. Can't you say they were aimed at you and the horses? If a human is there it may make a difference?

Probably too late now though...

Morons, they need a rocket up their **** and see how they like it.

I really see no need for fireworks to be sold except under license to organised displays.

i did say that as both me and my step sister were actually down at the field about to get them in when they set it off! and they wouldnt do anything! oh how i wish i had a rifle right at that moment!! there would have been no hesitation from me i have never been so livid!
