My horse has just been turned out 24/7 and has been gradually doing more work... He seems to have had a bit of a brain transplant!!

He used to be really easy going, in fact quite lazy!!.... Now he seems nervy, strong and just tries to do his own thing all the time... My schooling sessions are a battle of the wills!!! Once he knows he is not winning, he will settle and do what he is told, but it is exhausting!!

He has started napping on hacks, just plain naughty!! Had all the usual back, saddle, teeth done, all fine....

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing!! HELP????

maybe spring grass? I know my pony used to get a bit bonkers this time of year when he was turned out etc.

You say gradually doing more work how much? what have you been doing before hand? Has he been doing things eg napping occasionally that you have maybe let him get away with? I know i used to put it down to him being fresh but my pony then realised he could get away with it so for a while i had a bumpy ride!

hope this helps a little

My boy gets like that this time of year, my advice is to just push him through it, horses tend to give up a lot quicker than we do unless there is something physically wrong with them. Just think positive and strong and sure you will come out of the otherside a stronger partnership :)

one other obvious thing which people do overlook is that if he is on good grazing have you cut back his hard feed as he won't be needing as much of it.

This can be the time of year where they seem to have a deficiency in magnesium. If that is the case it can manifest itself in the behaviour you are experiencing. Magnitude by American Equine is pure magnesium and is pretty cheap. Might be worth a go. I got mine from supplement solutions. I think it was about £16 for 6 months supply.
