A few days before bonfire night I can live with as you expect it but already?! have they no thought for people with animals :(

I wish they were banned. I can't believe that something which makes so much noise can be legal! If your dog barks, or you have a party with loud music which might affect a few people, the law is on you like a ton of bricks, but apparently letting off fireworks which affect huge areas is ok? Unfortunately this country has had years of spineless governments which don't want to "upset" anyone or the current favourite "infringe human rights". God forbid they should change a law effectively. Oh, and of course the government makes a fortune out of VAT on fireworks....I'll stop now before I start ranting....

we had them last wednesday  We are surrounded by houses (in middle of the village) and it's the reason we normally end up bringing them in for the winter earlier than we'd like especially as it is so dry out there atm!

Lucky in that around us they generally only a week before and after really.

Although we used to have fireworks parties at home when we were kids (only on the actual bonfire night though!) It was always pretty much some catherine wheels, a traffic light and a couple of screamers. It was more about standing around a small garden fire with friends and family and eating toffee apples and parkin.

The fireworks these days are ridiculous, and imho really shouldn't be sold to the public. We have a leaflet for some in our office, some have ridiculous names like megadeath and the like, and cost about £70 for on firework!

It drives me mad, this is one of my pet hates! they shouldn't be sold to the public imo, had one set off on our street last night, was like a hail of gunfire, just about every house has cats or dogs on this street, no consideration at all!
And we've all heard the horror stories of idiots tying them to cats tails etc...

Seriously... It needs sorting!

I agree, fireworks should only be allowed for public displays not for general sale.

waste of money anyhow - i mean would you really set light to £100 in twenties??

I understand, and none of my horses have liked them, this is the first guy fawkes night with new pony.

How ever I do not want to see them banned, just tighter regulations in when they can be used.

In fact new years eve is worse around here, and I am a hater of new year, and I am Scottish !!!

I heard the first ones tonight, they were quite far away so nothing too terrifying but the horses were all on edge - they're a nightmare when the displays get closer to us. I wish people had to announce somewhere when they were going off, so that we just had a bit of warning. The big displays aren't so much of a big deal because of the advertising that goes into them, you know when to expect them & when to administer calmer / get the horses in - but all the random ones during october & through november are just awful, it really frightens ours and once they're running about its so difficult to catch them again.

We have fireworks alot of weekends throughtout the summer, we start getting them during the day and most nights (up to 2am) from middle of Sept right through now until January next year. It's never ending. No joke when you have noise phobic dogs, even during the day when I have tried to walk them the bangs start and dogs run off.
Please look at this site and vote, don't know if it will do any good but what else can we do?

I am not a fireworks fan .....as much from the damage they do to humans ( I am an ex nurse and I have worked in A&E as well as a burns unit) as their effect on animals.

However its not likely they will be banned any time soon so my premise is to do what I can to minimise adverse effects as far as possible.

For those whos horses are affected does anyone do anything to habituate your horses to the noise ..... there are CD's specifically designed for this. We habituate horses to all sorts of other things like traffic so why not noise. That way they might startle a little at the first one but then settle down and maybe even watch them like many horses do.

It is surely up to us to prepare our horses as much as possible to help them face things that we do not have the power to control ......... and if we do this then problems like fireworks going off when we dont know about them and have not prepared horses for by sedating or getting them in will just not be an issue.

They go off all year round here (Spain) as the spanish lurve their fireworks and bangers....as well as the hunters gunshots, my horses take no notice anymore, not even an ear twitch,

they dont even bother with the hot air balloons going over either now..

I have seen the effect of fireworks on humans too, I am ex St John Ambulance, I was on duty one night and was attending a concert, some special effects fireworks at the front of the stage misfired and went off into the eyes of a young lady at the front, we gave her first aid before the paramedics arrived, poor girl had some of the debris out of the firework in her eyes, it had penetrated her iris by the looks of it. I don't like fireworks either for this reason.

I heard them start from Tuesday ,
To be perfectly honest I wouldn't want to see them band , they can really enjoyable in the right eviroment and hands .
I do believe there should be regulations ,on who they sell to

I'm dreading it starting round here. My yard is on the edge of a quiet village, and I'm not worried about the older 2 horses, but its the youngsters first winter out, and a week before I bought him he had crashed through a post and rail fence and bolted 2 miles up the road all because a helicopter flew over a bit low! I'm hoping he's too attached to my mare to try anything silly if fireworks go off nearby. Its not even really the noise, as we have farm land all around our field so plenty of bird-scarers that don't bother him at all, its the flashes that will scare him. Bringing him in would make him 10x worse, so I'll be crossing my fingers that he'll stick with the herd, and not smash my fencing down, injure himself, and disappear up the road!

It always amazes me how people can claim they haven't got any money but will quite happily waste what they haven't got, on something which is gone, literally in a flash. Some of those "suitcase" ones that go off 25 times or whatever cost £10 or more. I'm all for proper commercial displays only (that doesn't include the local pub's efforts in the car park) and a public ban. There is a huge black market for stolen fireworks and it is always the commercial grade ones that get nicked. Someone I knew got hold of a catherine wheel that had fallen off the back of a lorry - it took 2 6 foot garden fence panels out when they lit it.

it tends to depend exactly how close they are as to how our 2 react, so long as not right next to them/their field they tend to stand and watch after the first one.

I actually prefer the boxes with 25+ bangs in one go, that way after the first one there is less of a shock so to speak as to when there are long gaps between them!

It's more fun when they start before it is even dark yet... and I am still riding in the field
