Bit of background - my mare didnt feel right a while ago, she was quite tense and unwilling to work into bridle. Had vet out who did bute trial, but noted that she was in season (I hadn't noticed - this is my first mare!). Bute trial worked, but i stopped it early when season ended to see if it was linked and lo and behold, lovely soft cooperative mare! Now on regumate for ovary pain during cycles. Had vet out to review as she's still quite tense through back and turns out she is lame behind so went in today for work up.
Started with nerve blocks from foot upwards, and all were negative. Got to stifle and popped needle in to block joint and mare decided shed had enough, started kicking out and needle snapped off. Cue some unscheduled surgery to removed embedded needle and call from vets. Now still none the wiser about her lameness and mare is now in small fenced off section in her field to recover from minor surgery and has pain killers and antibiotics. Not impressed. Got to wait at least 10 days and see how she is before returning for a bone scan as issue is obviously higher up. Will waste a big chunk of my transport costs allowance with insurance having to do 2 trips, which has really annoyed me, plus potential problems that are now going to arise with stifle. Joint is luckily not involved, but 3 incisions in to stifle area to find the bloomin needle is never good.
So once stifle has healed, I am thinking bone scan will show up sacro iliac injury. Would have been nice if we could have found that out today though, rather than waiting for the incisions to heal. I know that's horses for you, but am still pissed off!
