My horse is such a pain!

He has been in a separate field from all his field mates for the past month, he suffered a bad case of displacement colic so when he came home from the vets 4 weeks ago I thought it best to put him in what will be the yards winter field rather than have him change fields again in a few weeks.

So for the past few weeks he has been watching his field mates play the adjacent field but he has been ok on his own. Today they all moved to the winter field and my dear boy gave them a right little welcome party.

He is out with 9 others, today 2 came in with slightly ripped rugs and 3 came in with their rugs completely shredded, to the point they can't be repaired!

I think after not being with them for a while he was trying to re-assert his position in the herd and where they came into what he must of though was his field and he was boss. He has always been a bit boisterous in the field, and this is not the first time he has ripped another’s rug, but he has never done it this bad before.

So anyway my problem is that the owners of the horses who have had their rugs ripped are understandably pretty peeved and are insisting that my horse now wear a muzzle, I am happy to do this until he settles down again but I have no idea which one to get.
My horse needs to be able to eat so I don’t want to restrict his grazing at all, has anyone ever modified a grazing muzzle for similar reasons.

Any other ideas would also be welcome.

We had a similar problem once and smeared the others' rugs with something harmless but foul tasting. Did the trick, and we only had to do it for a short while because after a while the rug ripper had completely stopped.

Can't remember what the stuff we used was though, sorry :o
