Following my previous post re fitting a saddle to a horse with muscle wastage, I have been using a pad to lift the front of my saddle cos the saddler isnt visiting for a couple of weeks - it seemed to do the trick, saddle no longer tipped forwards, horse was comfortable etc for thes first 4 days, but it now looks like here is a line of muscle spasm where the pad ends!!! ARRRRGGHHHH!!! Didnt think a half inch thick peice of soft foam possibly cause any damage??!!!

I know my horse is the most over sensitive whimp, so it probs seems much worse than it is... but I really dispair sometimes.... I thought I was doing the right thing, putting the pad in to protect him from any possible damage from the saddle cos it was sitting too low at the wither... and now I've made things worse!!!

I'm sure that its not a normal reaction though... but this is the horse who comes up with a swollen line if you even flick him with a schooling whip or the lump the size of half a tennis ball if he gets a fly bite.... does anyone else have problems like this?

So frustrating.... will need more physio now.... feel better for the rant tho!

(Thanks for the advice all the same - I'm sure it would have worked with any normal horse - just not mine!!)

Oh no! What sort of pad did you use? I know there are some riser pads that are made of foam that are really bad for that. I would use fibergee instead - it's much softer and the horse can build muscle underneath it much more easily. I had the same problem with a horse with muscle wastage and this worked for me.

Don't worry mine did the same, so used a really thick numnah and then riser pad over this, then saddle, and did not leave a mark then. Have you got access to a poly pad or similar?

I mail ordered a prolite, which arrived yesterday, so am hoping that combined with a thick numnah will not cause any problems.... sods law tho - it arrives too late and now I wont be able to ride at all for a while, so dont need it yet!

Hoping that cos I have caught this early it wont be too dificult to sort.... its just annoying! Yet another set back!

why ride in a saddle that you know doesn't fit? Even if your saddler cant come for a few weeks? I wouldn't put my horse through that. Its like yourself running in trainers that are 10 sizes too small.
