arrrghh saddle dilema!

Had saddler out today for new horse, and now really left with three options.

1) Try a narrower gullet on the Wintec we're borrowing and see if that makes it a better fit.

2) See if he's got any second hand saddles back in the shop that might fit.

3) Buy the lovely new kent and masters saddle, but would mean less money to spend on other tack/lessons etc.

Help!! What do you think the best option is? We're expecting him to muscle up and therefore get wider so adjustable seemed like a good option, but I just don't know! Ideally I'd love a leather saddle but they're just so expensive!

I hated the wintec for me & b. Having an adjustable gullet, does not mean the saddle can always be adjusted to fit your horse. I wouldn't be considering that as an option.

If you can find out a make/model that suits him, then shop about. Ebay is very good for picking up a good bargain saddle & your saddler can 'tweak' it for the perfect fit. I have got a beautiful nearly brand new Nathanial underwood dressage saddle worth in the region of £1200 new. for..... £360 :)

If you get a decent saddle, then you will always have something to trade in against another decent one.

I probably wouldn't get a new one if he may change shape. They lose too much money too quickly.
 
Ok, I've been thinking it all over and came to the conclusion that with the budget i've got (ie, blow it all on a new saddle or less on a saddle and more on other stuff he could do with like a new bridle, travel boots, stable rugs etc) it is a good idea to buy a second hand leather saddle, or even something like a Thorowgood T6. But I know absolutely nothing when it comes to saddles and fitting them, so have a few questions:

How effective is it to reflock a saddle, so if we bought one that fits him now but he widens up, would we be able to do something about it?

And also, we're giving the saddler a ring tomorrow, would it be a good idea to ask him what sort of thing should be we looking out for if we go second hand, and would be be able to tweak it for us?
