arrrrgh! Horse not malted properly... any ideas?

Exactly as it says... It is like the never ending story, handfulls are still coming out of my little man (12months old) I have used a shedding comb, but he still has lots of long winter coat. I have had to cut the long stuff in his girth area because he gets so hot during the day that it matts up. What to do? Any ideas? I am loathed to get the clippers out and don't want to put a rug on to encourage him to shed his coat since he is boiling as it is, bless!

Am assuming you mean moulted :D

My little filly has still got some winter coat across her back and I think its because its still not that warm overnight. IMO unless you want to show him I'd just groom as normal and it'll come out when its ready.
 
he might just be hanging on to it a bit if he is still a big fluffly baby! I'd just make sure his nutrition is correct, and keep giving him nice grooms. Did he live out over the winter? That would have given him even more of a coat to loose, some are just slow to loose it. A horse on our yard still has his saddle patch from his hunter clip - just reluctant to give it up I guess!
 
Agree with above, just carry on grooming him as normal.
The yearlings at work have nice summer coats on their head and necks, but are still quite fluffy elsewhere!

Some horses may just be slow to loose it. My horse had a full summer coat by end of March, yet my friends horse still has his winter fluff on his legs.
 
cool, I'm not the only one with a partially fluffy monster then :) It's just so frustrating since he is so hot when the sun comes out bless him. I have seen quite a few horses ponies around last month looking like they have just had their mid winter clip... its crazy! I have no intention of showing him this year, he still looks way to goofy and gangly for that ;) Yes he was wintered out and although I rugged him up, he had already grown his winter coat by then, it was more to get him used to rugs than anything, I don't think I have one item of clothing that doesn't have white bum fluff on it ;) ;)
