First post here... so Hi ! Im interested if anyone has any belief in/ sucess with alternative arthritic relief. Have been reading about magnetic boots, different supplements, homeopathic oil rubs but i thought you all might be able to tell me if anything worth trying. Pony has it in one knee. She plays polo, so worst combo, hard ground and galloping. Stayed sound last year on one knee injection, had same this year and surprisingly she feels so much sharper and quicker but i can actually see the knee changing shape, 2 lumps instead of 1! would try anything else i can do to help her out as i adore her. Love to hear any suggestions

Has she had arthimid if not you should but once the knee is changing shape she needs an easy life kept comfortable with oral medication as well as joint invention if necessary.
My experience is that knee arthritis is difficult to manage .

I had one arthritic mare (TBxWelshD) who responded very well to magnetic legwraps, after a recommendation from a friend who managed a laminitic pony with them. Lots of people, especially on here, have tried to explain the results away but I know that they worked for her. She got so that she held out her legs to have the boots put on, because she felt the effect.
I got the boots as a last ditch attempt before pts; she was hobbling in the field in walk on bute. As per instructions, she wore the boots for the first 24 hours and then she came trotting in for her tea, looking perfectly sound. She continued to wear them on alternate legs for 12 hours per day and they continued to keep her sound for the next 3 months when she was pts because of something different. However I have tried the boots on other horses and not seen any real effect.

Thats really interesting, thanks. Each case is so different that i do think its worth trying different things out.

My mare had an old fracture in her knee which we found when x raying as she was very slightly unlevel on a circle , she also had a small lump on it which had come up some years before. She was mainly a happy hacker with a bit of riding club competing so had an easy life.. she was injected and came completely sound for the first year, it didn’t work for the next year so I just hacked her gently a couple of times a week until she injured her stifle when in the field and I lost her because of that ..

I have an arthritic knee. There are things I don't do eg little jumps off a kerb, definitely no running etc. I can simply be sitting and there is sudden pain so I adjust my leg etc. I'm very mindful of my movement to avoid aggravating it because trust me when it flares it is extremely painful and even walking is very hard.

If you truly adore her more than her usefulness in playing polo then you stop playing polo.

Im sure she will let me know when she is uncomfortable or wishes to stop playing. For now she is having fun, clearly very comfortable on her knee and her medication is working as it should.

The trouble is that she may still be in pain and you wouldn’t know and polo would degrade the knee until it can’t be fixed anymore unfortunately

I think you are fooling yourself because you want to carry on playing. Polo is exceptionally hard on the knee joints with the sudden stops and sharp turns. There probably isn't any other horse sport you could do with her that would be more likely to shorten her life.

So it would seem that what you meant when you said

was that you adore playing polo on her. If you adored the horse for herself, you would retire her from the game.

Can I just add that I totally respect your right to continue playing polo on a sound horse. I don't like the game, personally, but you have every right to that choice.

What I don't respect is saying you adore her if you won't stop playing polo, because you have joined a forum where people have given up their dreams and even turned their entire lives upside down because they really do adore their horses.
